how to make the headings (\chapter{...}, \section{...}, \subsection{...}, ...) bold? writing \section{\textbf{...}} results in the heading text being bold but not the section number.

There might not be a way, but I don't know too much about it.  Latex does a lot of formatting stuff for you, but I think the tradeoff is that you can't always get things to look *exactly* how you want them to.

LaTeX styling is deep voodoo. Your best bet is to find a ready made style or package that does it for you.
The quick hack solution is to look into the style file you're using, copy over the relevant sections, and tweak it a bit.

What editor are you using? Better yet, who is currently fucking you in the ass, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs?

If its Bill Gates, download TexnicCenter...it literally does all of the work for you. Even an Obama supporter could figure it out.
