Schools in Canada, Pre-Med?

Name: Anonymous 2009-07-20 14:29

I am predominantly interested in attending medical school after I complete my bachelors, the only problem is, I don't know what to do for my bachelors, I'm going to look at The University of Toronto, and Ryerson University at some point in the coming weeks, and I know I want to do a core science with some math involved, I love the idea of studying physics, or astrophysics/astronomy. The only problem is I never had strong math marks through high-school, I was bored out of my mind at that point.
I plan on taking two adult night school courses between now and when I would attend such a nice school (much nicer than my own school anyways,) one course in physics, and the other in functions so that I have a chance a studying in a field such as this. The issue comes in to play when they look at my previous studies, neuroscience, I may stick with it, I know I won't stick with my current school though, it's terrible, it reminds me of a giant high-school, full of all the kids who didn't have the marks to go somewhere else.
I am also very qualified to study biology having a diploma in health sciences, and two near perfect semesters of biology work at a post-secondary level. I am also going to look at The University of Western Ontario at some point in the coming weeks, and am highly considering the Bachelor's of Medical Science program there, it seems the wisest choice, although I am uneasy about it's fall back options should I not meet the requirements for admission to a medical school.
The reason I am so concerned about my undergraduate is that should I fail to enroll, or complete my medical education for any reason I would like to earn my doctorate of science and teach at a university level.
So anon, which field do you think would be better for attending a medical school in Canada, and still provide the desired fallback of a teaching/research position as a professor at a University? Any suggestions of another field to look into?

Health sciences is flaky crap.

Do a degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or biomedical engineering.

All the universities you mentioned are fine, just get 3.8 GPA or above, which isn't too hard because it's all memorizing.

If you fail to meet the entrance requirements for medical school with your medical science degree, you could probably become a lab tech.  What are the upper level courses for that program?

You might want to do a couple of co-op semesters, too.  It will help you out regardless.

Can't speak for Canada (Irish here) but we can enroll in Medicine as postgrad (we can also enroll directly as undergrad, but the requirements are ridiculous). In theory if you had something as useless as an arts degree you could apply for postgrad med. But anyone who has applied usually has from the sciences. Anything like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmocology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Microbiology or Physiology would be adequate and helpful in their respective areas (personally I would head towards biochemistry because it gives you a great foundation in the necessary chemistry as well as lots of time to mess around with  drug developerment and interactions, developmental biology, and generally understanding the low level functioning of the body. That or physiology).

I had a girlfriend who was in premed, then I saw her debt...

just an update anon, I'm going to the University of Toronto for Physics, this will be my pre-med, although I may switch over to health sciences at some point due to it's relevance in my field of interest.

>>4  it's not that bad, here's a summery of my debt so far (everything till the asterisk was paid from savings and accrued no debt) it's also where I currently am.

1) Pre-health sciences (useless, but I changed from compsci a month into a program and wasn;t able to get a refund, so I took a science to pass the time, at this point I was considering nursing then i saw what school nursing was like and figured I could do way more. *  3,000
2) 1 year cognition, behavior, and neuroscience (university of Windsor) also useless, didn't finish it, UWindsor was a shit hole Still got my medschool pre-req in bio out of it though   *  7,000
3) University of Toronto Physics, 4 years 8,000/yr (est) 32,000
University of Toronto School of Medicine 4 years 18,000/yr = 72,000

so assuming I don't screw up my undergrad and have to do something else to make up for it I can look forward to a total school cost of 114,000$ + books= (setting books at 1000 for med school, per semester, and 700 for undergraduate)114,000+ 11,700 = 125,700$

I've had several friends who did physics for premed... and I can't say they did well.  If you genuinely like physics and are good at math, then I have no complaint.  If you're at all like my friends, then you're going to be the "physics makes me look good on med school apps" type, which is epic fail.  This is because physics is not an easy major [for most ppl at least], and the correspondingly lower gpa isn't worth it.

Feel free to prove me wrong.  Maybe undergrad physics will convert you from the medical establishment.  Anything's possible.

GPA is more important than your major. Pick something that you like AND you can do well in, and that will give you enough spare time to maybe volunteer in a lab or something.

Give physics a try. Even if you fuck up your first year there are schools in Canada that will only look at your best/last years (Queens, Western, Ottawa, Dal), or drop a certain number of credits from consideration (Toronto), or give you bonus points if you get a Masters or something (Mac, NOSM), so you have some wiggle room.

What kind of crap is that.  A major in biology, biochemistry, or kinesiology is far more useful than quantum physics if you're going into med school.

Except what major you picked has no impact on admissions (except in Quebec, but lol Quebec). It'll help for the MCATs/make med school a little easier, but in terms of actually getting in it doesn't matter what you take.

Sup dude. Same pos as you.

Anyways, I'm heading to york this fall for studies in chemistry, no biochem, just pure chem. I talked to several counselors and they said it was prefectly fine, whatever career you choose you should choose one with backgrounds in chem.

Don't change these.
