I had my telescope out a few minutes ago looking at the moon and
stars and noticed something odd. There was a star(?) maybe west
southwestish, I dunno, I was just messing around. What was wierd
was that it changes colors, between greenish and red, sort of like
a tacky christmas light. I'm in central North Carolina and it's
about a fifth of the way up the sky now. Anyone know what the heck
it is? I thought maybe a satelite but I wouldn't expect it to be
so bright and maybe to move more than it did. Anyone have any
clue?

i saw something very bright about halfway between the horizon and the moon earlier tonight around 10pm eastern. bright enough to take notice, but i don't have a clue what it was, and didnt watch long enough to see if it was moving. it seemed to flicker quite a lot though.

OP here
I saw what 2 is talking about, it didn't seem to flicker abnormally to me. Don't know what it is specifically but it didn't seem nearly as strange as a the color changing star.

If it appeared stationary, it was probably Venus, or maybe Mars. If it was moving, it was either a satellite in a relatively low orbit or a plane. You can't see geosynchronous (stationary) satellites with a telescope because they're way too far away given their small size.
I can't think of a 4chan-style quip to insult your knowledge, so I'm just going to say astronomy is awesome. Keep up the good work. You should download Stellarium and Celestia.

jumbo jet.
they fly up high enough to see, and far enough away not to hear them.
Emitted energy frequencies. Within our visible spectrum, such fluctuations result in rapid color changes percieved by us. It's flashing you and you like it.
