why did the first organism replicate ? where does this drive for survival and continuation come from? A bunch of chemicals/amino acids/etc. come together, and create a single celled organism, lets say, but why doesnt this organism just die? It's not like it could think 'hmm i think i will replicate now, to continue my species'. how does such a drive arise? I'm not sure if im conveying my ideas clearly, but it's a question that has been on my mind.

scientists can't answer this either, but i think the idea is that 1) it is luck; OR
2) molecules organise themselves autonomously, and if the conditions are right, a self-reinforcing feedback loop will result creating "life"

because if it didn't we wouldn't be here to ask this stupid question.

Wahey?
Your question doesn't make sense. The first organism didn't replicate, molecules that self-replicated arose before any of them were complicated enough to be called "organisms". Once you have self-replication you have the match in the fuel tank.

where does this drive for survival and continuation come from?
Because those that don't have it die out?

>>1 why did the first organism replicate
This post caught my attention because I thought it said "orgasm".

Radiation mutates cells. The radiation that used to be rampant caused several sub spieces to come from one animal and only the ones that mutated with useful abilities survived.

I'd like to make it clear that this is NOT a question about evolution. This is a question about the origin of life, which is not a part of evolution. Evolution doesn't have anything to do with how the first cells came to be or starting reproducing; once cells began to exist and be able to reproduce, that's when evolution started to happen.
There's nothing more irritating than when religious people ask this question like it disproves evolution. Same fucking thing with the big bang. "The big bang can't be true, because what caused the big bang HUH?!" "We don't know yet, that's NOT PART OF THE FUCKING THEORY YOU GODDAMN ZEALOTS."

As >>4 said, self-replicating chemicals existed long before they began to organize themselves into cells.
I think you misunderstand what the "drive" to reproduce is for a cell. It's not like the cell makes some conscious decision about it. It doesn't sit around and ponder what it should do. It's just a very complicated chemical reaction that starts with one cell and a bunch of chemicals, and ends up with two cells.

why does evolution selectively choose traits that are best suited for survival? why not something else? why is survival so important?

You make it sound like you think evolution is some bystander who decides what traits are most important. Evolution promotes survival because organisms which do not survive can't reproduce, thus preventing them from contributing to the genetic make-up of the future generations of their species.

Evolution does not select but the analogy >>10 produced is fine, as we know what he means. And evolution doesn't necessarily produce survival traits, but I suppose it depends on how you define "survival".

The analogy may work, but there are people who don't know enough about evolution and biology who would take it too seriously and then not believe it.
the first organism did not replicate. they died. and the next ones that came after that, died. and the next ones... and so on. eventually however, some of them were built like they would replicate, and we havent managed to get rid of them yet.
