evolution question

why did the first organism replicate ? where does this drive for survival and continuation come from? A bunch of chemicals/amino acids/etc. come together, and create a single celled organism, lets say, but why  doesnt this organism just die? It's not like it could think 'hmm i think i will replicate now, to continue my species'. how does such a drive arise? I'm not sure if im conveying my ideas clearly, but it's a question that has been on my mind.

Evolution does not select but the analogy >>10 produced is fine, as we know what he means. And evolution doesn't necessarily produce survival traits, but I suppose it depends on how you define "survival".
