Why do people say the disfigured are pretty?

Whenever someone gives birth to some horribly deformed child (Such as toxic-chan, the girl who was missing about 60% of her skull or something) why do the parents/relatives insist that they're "beautiful" or a "gift from god" or something equally retarded and ironic?

They aren't beautiful, nor would anyone in their right mind consider them a gift of some sort. If a horribly disfigured baby was a gift, then why isn't cancer a gift? Or suffering severe head trauma and becoming a vegatable, or other things that most people would consider to be bad?

It's even more ridiculous when they claim their child to be a gift from god, because their child is never going to live a normal life. Depending on how messed up they are, they may be both mentally and physically handicapped. Toxic-chan cost her parents over 3 million dollars in medical bills, and she can't even breathe or eat properly. She's almost deaf too. I wouldn't be surprised from the shape of her head if she was mentally handicapepd also, and at least partially blind. And she's just nasty to look at. She's never going to live a normal life.

Whenever someone is disfigured like that, everyone always lies out of their ass saying shit like that, just so they'll sound nice and caring, or some BS like that. When in their heads they're thinking "jesus christ it's disgusting why must it exist oh god why oh why is it alive why would they let it live oh my god its looking at me what kind of parent would let that thing live holy shit I might throw up" Although it might not be a giant run-on sentance for some people, that's probably what most people are thinking.

And then there's the self rightious asses who try to say shit like "NO SHE'S BEAUTIFUL BCUZ BEUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDR LOL" That may be, but that doesn't justify the fucked up, bad tastes some people have. That's the exact same argument peolpe use to defend other disgusting things, like scat fetishes for instance.

Yea, I once said to a parent with a downsyndrom child "You realize you might as well stop with trying to make her be like a normal kid. She dosn't act like a normal kid, and she shure as hell doesn't look like one, so why try and make her fit in with normal kids who, at there age, will only know how to make fun of her?" the parent replyed by saying "Shes a gift sent from heven who came to brighten up everyones day." I then said "She only does one thing to my day, cause me to question your logic."

Personally I would say that if they say the child is a gift from god or other such things then they need help themselves.
however it doesnt mean that child cannot bring great joy to the parents and people who care for the child.

any small improvement is seen as a giant step, raising peoples hopes. making them happy for a time...is that such a bad thing?

I used to be a huge prat in high school and I lapsed into depression and became a loner in the last year, the cause wasn't that I was a prat by nature or neccesarily evil, but that no one ever sat down with me and made me understand where I was going wrong. If someone bullied me my parents were all "oh he's jealous, don't worry, everything's ok". Bullying is wrong and you shouldn't give in to bullies, but denying the truth solves nothing.

Situation with bullying in public schools is ridiculous. These are also most likely the same parents who blame rock music, video games, and movies for the things their kids do, when in reality it's the parents' fault because they're too goddamn lazy to teach their kid right from wrong.

I believe the solution is simply to get people to realise that even though the truth can cause awkward situations, embaressment and unhappiness, the truth itself is not the problem as by definition it is a message about reality and if you ignore reality this drastically reduces your ability to prevent, deter and resolve the actual causes of unhappiness.
