Executive Dysfunction

Is anyone else afflicted with this shit?  My parents took me to Johns Hopkins a while back, and after giving me tests and hooking me up to machines and shit, this is the main thing they told me I have.  It's a problem with the frontal lobe of the brain.

Basically the biggest problems I have is that it makes "task initiation" and "task shifting" almost impossible for me.  This means that I can barely start doing anything without intense effort.  And, surprise, when you can't START anything, you can't DO anything.  When I *do* get up the motivation to start something, however, the "task shifting" disability kicks in and it's really fucking hard to stop what I'm doing and switch to something else (and then I need to "start" doing something again, whee).

It basically makes it as if I'm just incredibly lazy.  Maybe that's a better description.  It's a typical problem that ADD/ADHD people have.  http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/ef_overview.htm for more information.

Anyone else struggling with this?  Share your experiences.

Sounds like a great excuse for drugs.  Lots and lots of them.  Either that, or you should take control of your own life instead of letting some shrinks give you an excuse to avoid self improvement.

You're the only person who can fix you.  It's hard as hell, sure, but you can still do it.

Wow... I had ADD as a kid, and while it's way different now, I find myself putting off doing important things indefinitely despite knowing full well logically that they must be done.

Thank you very much for the link!

Welcome to the lazy part of human nature. I do exactly the same thing and I'm not going to assume that I have some madeup dysfunction. All you need to combat laziness is a bit of organization and determination. Christ, the crap that these shrinks spout out about everyone having something wrong with them to line their pockets with cash is fucking retarded.

And likewise, the people who think that no one has these disorders and think ADD is a made-up condition are fucking retarded.

You have no fucking idea what it's like being clinically depressed; wanting nothing more than to start work on a project, but being unable to due to some vague feeling that you're doing something gravely wrong.

ADD is a condition where there is abnormaly low stimulation in the brain. They are constantly shifting focus just to keep alert. This is why stimulants seem to calm them down and for some, tranquilizers make them hyper. Consequently, the adjustment to having ADD is adulthood is to develop some obsesive compulsive behaviors, which is why they have a hard time stoping their task. Initiation of a task is often difficult because they can not decide where to begin. This also appears to become somewhat compensated for somehow as they grow into adulthood.

Clinically depressed is different from regular depression because a clinic told you you're depressed?

Don't change these.
