As a server, or on the command line, it's great. But the desktop experience is just tiresome.
For every problem, there are a dozen solutions online. And it's not as if you simply look for the problem occurring on your distro because even the same distro on two different machines may require different solutions. So you try them one by one.
These may involve hacking configuration files, downloading apps, or even writing scripts to reset settings every time your machine returns from suspension.
And the crazy thing is, despite the wide adoption of linux in the server and mobile world, the desktop guys just carry on like this is all normal. That constant compromise and tinkering is part of the experience.
I really wanted to make Linux desktop work because so many of my development libraries are made for linux. But I'm going back to my original linux server running in virtualbox setup.

I hate to say this, but you might have been using shit distros and shitty software for linux.
I haven't compromised anything I care about from using linux, and have only gained much more significant benefits.
>And it's not as if you simply look for the problem occurring on your distro because even the same distro on two different machines may require different solutions
Few and far between in the problems that are universal. Yes, fragmentation and minor differences is an issue that gets you sometimes, especially if your distro has poor documentation and you're forced to use third-party sources or other distro's documentation.

Yep, customization of software on linux often does give you, but rarely require for typical desktop software, this ability.
>downloading apps
That's what software is there for. To fix an issue and do stuff.
>writing scripts to reset settings every time your machine returns from suspension.
There is something seriously wrong if you have to do this. I've never experienced it though.
You know, people always act like Macs have the easiest and most intuitive GUI, yet I've found them to have the most completely illogical, retarded, and just downright stupid GUI. Even compared to Linux or FreeBSD
