fortran again

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-30 16:10

How can I read a single character in fortran? How about a whole line? Why is this piece of shit language still used to teach courses in universities? (bad universities, surely).

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-30 16:16

By using FORTRESS instead.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-30 16:19

I don't like them. I am forced to write in fortran, so fortran it is.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-30 17:27

guise?

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-30 18:51

I don't even know Fortran, but I typed ``How can I read a single character in Fortran'' into a search engine, and now it seems I know more Fortran than you.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 11:39

top fucking result: FGETC - The GNU Fortran Compiler
Standard: GNU extension
The rest of the fucking results are not relevant to the search terms. If you found something ELSE that is standard, please do fucking share it.

You fucking piece of shit, assuming I am unable to use google? You fucking faggot. MY ONLY FUCKING PROBLEM IS THAT I HAVE TO USE FORTRAN. I COULD DO IT IN 20 OTHER LANGUAGES. I don't need your little shitty elitism. I was elitist before you were born.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 12:33

Fortran is still the best language for heavy numeric number-crunching, faggot. That's why it's still used, so quit your bitching.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 12:45

>>7
It's used because dinosaurs in the industry won't try new languages. Also for supporting shitty legacy infrastructure which really just needs to be replaced.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 12:49

>>8
No, it's because those "new languages" can't match the performance of fortran number-crunching. And the fortran legacy is better than anything else.

Okay, grandpa.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 13:15

fortran
in universities?

I'm pretty sure, unis teach Lisp and ML/Haskell. Although most Russian unis teach Pascal, and some especially shitty eastern european unis teach QBasic or just Microsoft Excel.

In general Pascal is like a holy language in Russia, like Hebrew or something.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 13:15

>>11
Also, MS Excel isn't a language, but they teach it under programming, so...

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 13:17

Still Simon Peyton Jones says Excel is a purely functional programming languages http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?MicrosoftExcelProgrammingLanguage

I fucking love it when I leave a thread and I come back to a bunch of faggot ass half ass worth replies

That `heavy numeric number-crunching' term you've used; that shit doesn't exist. It doesn't exist in computers, it doesn't exist in mathematics. It's just some abstract general bullshit term to describe something you simply do not have a grasp of, naive faggot. tl;dr everything has been already said in >>8.

I know at least of one university that teaches FORTRAN. You know why this happens? INCOMPETENCY OF THE PROFESSORS. A proper first course on programming would be flexible; let the student decide in which language to write his/her program, let it be C, OCaml, prolog, haskell, lisp, factor, pseudocode, whatnot. If HE/SHE decides to include a full definition of his programming language before using it, it should be valid. BEFUNGE93? Sure. LOLCODE? ok. It's not a real issue, because most would write in C or Java anyway. I'd give bonus points to anyone who would write proper pseudocode. Are you from russia by any chance?

>>13
Nothing that nobody would ever say would make it ok to ``teach'' MS products in universities.

The whole point of being student is that you don't have knowledge to decide. Moreover, in practice you will have no choice, because business may order you to write PHP, even if you learned Factor at uni.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-31 14:43

You may in fact do have the knowledge to decide. A general guideline for those fucking pissers that have no clue would be OK I guess. The rest could take a fucking break from reading FORTRAN manuals and code in something better.

In practice, you won't code in fortran, so your other argument is invalid.

You don't seem to understand; my beef is not with PHP, Java or whatever shitty language you're thinking of; My beef is specifically with fortran.

Humanity has a lot of legacy fortran code, so I guess it is your fate to maintain it, while all the cool kids get Lisp and Haskell. Enjoy your wasted life.

Because old dudes wrote the Fortran to jiggie the virtual molecules, IBN still builds supercomputers and sells Fortran compilers for them, and now you maintain their Fortran to jiggie even more virtual molecules and shit.

Ni-kun, Fortress is dead. Almost for year now.

https://blogs.oracle.com/projectfortress/entry/fortress_wrapping_up

Oracle killed it.

I'm glad it died.

 Mathematical syntax
The idea of "typesetting" the code using LaTeX has received mixed reviews, and many potential users find the issue of keyboarding the extended Unicode character set daunting. Nevertheless, even in its more verbose ASCII form, the syntax of Fortress, especially the notion of treating juxtaposition as a user-definable operation, has proved to be very convenient.

Don't change these.
