How can I read a single character in fortran? How about a whole line? Why is this piece of shit language still used to teach courses in universities? (bad universities, surely).

I'm pretty sure, unis teach Lisp and ML/Haskell. Although most Russian unis teach Pascal, and some especially shitty eastern european unis teach QBasic or just Microsoft Excel.

A proper first course on programming would be flexible; let the student decide in which language to write his/her program, let it be C, OCaml, prolog, haskell, lisp, factor, pseudocode, whatnot. If HE/SHE decides to include a full definition of his programming language before using it, it should be valid. BEFUNGE93? Sure. LOLCODE? ok.
