How can I read a single character in fortran? How about a whole line? Why is this piece of shit language still used to teach courses in universities? (bad universities, surely).

It's used because dinosaurs in the industry won't try new languages. Also for supporting shitty legacy infrastructure which really just needs to be replaced.
