Let's make /prog/ a better place

Name: Ihavedreams 2012-12-21 2:39

Hello everyone. Let's have actual discussions on our board instead of letting it die. To achieve this we will create rules that *we* will follow. If another person doesn't follow those rules we will call him out on his foolishness and retardation.

Rule 1: Create threads which are related to programming or computer science or mathematics. If a person doesn't do this,
tell him that you actually wanted to discuss programming and you are'nt happy with his childish behaviour.

Rule 2: Stop spewing "meme" bullshit. If you must, put them at the end of a constructive comment.
Example:
instead of this
         hax my anus
say this:
I do not agree with your reasoning because ...
         also shalom hymie .
Rule 3: Instead of verbally abusing  a poster, first say why you do not agree with him , then verbally abuse him.

Please post your thoughts on these views. (Some of you edgy teenagers might actually start spewing memes, let's ignore them)
I would also like you to post rules which you would like to be followed for creating a better board.

I wish people would actually do this. I have seen so many intelligent posters on /prog/. But even those guys usually end up acting all retarded.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 2:50

its just not possible, its dead dead DEAD.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 2:50

I do not agree with your reasoning because you are a huge faggot.
also hax my anus

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 2:52

>2012
>still on /prog/

Name: Ihavedreams 2012-12-21 2:57

I have actually found many intelligent posts on /prog/. But you have to wade through bullshit. I think we should change this.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 2:58

IT'S OVER DONT YOU SEE? ITS OVER!

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 3:02

WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!
WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?
THERE'S NO OPTION!
IT'S ALL USELESS, IT'S FAILED ALREADY!
IT'S TOO LATE, DON'T YOU SEE?
IT'S USELESS NOW, IT'S RUINED!
I GIVE UP, FUCK IT!

hey op, you are a faggot who should die in a fucking fire.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 3:06

Let's talk about the rules please. Think about a /prog/ where every user contributes to productive discussions.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 3:09

>>10
don't be such an idealist, such a thing will never exist. prog is officially dead and will never improve. please, just leave it at that .

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 3:15

>>11
Have you looked at the programming threads on /g/. They used to be mostly language wars. Now they are actual productive discussions. I don't think /prog/ is dead. Sure, there will still be shit posters around, but *we* don't have to be among them.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 3:17

>>12
wake up, prog is dead.

They are capable of delicate surgery, creating beautiful works of art, and comforting someone feeling down, but according to a new study your hands evolved to smash someone in the face. From the article: "Human hands evolved so that men could make fists and fight, and not just for manual dexterity, new research finds. The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, adds to a growing body of evidence that humans are among the most aggressive and violent animals on the planet. "With the notable exception of bonobos, great apes are a relatively aggressive group of mammals," lead author David Carrier told Discovery News. "Although some primatologists may argue that chimpanzees are the most aggressive apes, I think the evidence suggests that humans are substantially more violent."'"

Take it back to /r/progaming/, ``please''!

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 5:09

So /prog/ is not about programming?

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 5:52

I'm up for making prog better, but how do you stop the shalom/spammer guy? Makes me think, if this guy was stopped, maybe I'm next? So fuck it.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 5:57

The best thing would be to try and ignore troll posts. Unfortunately, outsiders will inevitably respond and even mr poster can be the same poster.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 8:21

You'll never (fully) overhaul things.
the board has
-no mods (which is probably a good thing, there are no good candidates IMHO)
-no way of removing shit threads (i.e. report button) that can't be used against good threads (see end of my post for such a strategy)
-no gauge of what level of /prog/ culture is reasonable
-userbase mostly consisting of those who pop in to make sure /prog/ stays on topic - i.e. talking about you, Ahmed.

Just make more threads that make /prog/ the place you want it to be. Don't expect it to change overnight, or ever.
If it does, expect it to invite a new form of shitposting- the invasion of other communities here, bringing with them opinionated, incorrect ideas about programming and lacking any ability to assimilate into whatever /prog/ culture is at that time. That's the problem of cleaning the place up too much.

>>18
==killing shit threads==
Select a thread, sagebomb it to no replies, then bump (blankpost or ``bampu pantsu'' /filler text) every other thread in page 1 (and even more). Script that and you're set.

That begs the question- why don't I make one?
I'm not a good programmer, nor know anything about scripting the above; which makes me think- maybe I should learn so.
It does seem like fun project, but I know I'll never get around to doing it.
If you do make it, keep it to yourself- otherwise people will use it to sage every thread. Be the dark knight that watches over prog.

Just to spell it out: your ``solution'' presumes that the people responsible for /prog/'s low quality are the ones interested in making it better.

Name: VIPPER 2012-12-21 14:48

Lets be realistic, without mods to ban spamming shitcunts like amhed there is no hope.

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 18:52

I am with you.  I will abide by these rules and enforce utility on [spoilers]prog[/spoilers].

Name: Anonymous 2012-12-21 19:14

I'm completely new to /prog/, and it seems to be a much better community than /g/.

The interface is different though, but I can already feel that I'm adapting.

However, the text-based boards seem to be technically very lacking.

Should someone email moot about this? Getting mods and a little bit of a technical overhaul could do us some good.

Why the fuck do you need a script? Just hit STOP during the `That Post Was VIP Quality!' page and set your browser to auto-refresh.
