Ruby is murderer

Why can such a low-level language be so badly slow? I can't comprehend it

low-level language
IHNBT

You should try Ruby on Rails, which simulates the experience of programming in Ruby after doing fat rails of Cocaine, speeding up your perception of the experience.  Please note that this will not stop you from wanting to go fasterFASTERFASTEERRARRGHHNNGNGNGNGNG hey let's go get some more coke guys!

C is a high level language.

I know nothing about the Ruby language, but it sounds appealing. Mostly because I like the idea of a ruby (the gem) and the logo is shiny.

Are these bad reasons to consider learning a programming language?

I tried reading this. I sincerely tried. But here on the first page, I gave up. Why do people have to write like this? Don't authors realize you can just write something without like, resorting to colloquialisms and so many zany gags you could balance a hamster on them?

Hmm, I don't know, >>6-san. Why do people discuss programming on /prog/ when far saner environments are available, free of spam and full of well respected people who actually know the difference between select() and epoll()?

Maybe there is no reason!!!!!!!!

Just about as valid as most people's reasoning.
And yes.

That and the fact that Rails is mostly documented in screencasts (and fucking http://railsforzombies.org/) is why I gave up on Ruby entirely. The community is worse than useless, and it makes it nigh impossible to get anything done.
And that's a damn shame, because it's actually a pretty okay language.

The difference is that with Lisp, that's not all there is. Shitty ``humour'' is omnipresent in the Ruby community.
FIOC used to be the same way with its Monty Python references, but that's really improved over the years. Maybe Ruby will too.

I love shitty ``humour'' (although more in the form of cringe-inducing mathematics- or science-related puns), I am a huge faggot and I was simply pointing out that it's not necessarily a bad thing.  People that matter (non-neurotypicals) don't give a shit about communities, the real issue here is that Ruby is shit and so is its documentation, so naturally the only people that are attracted to it are programming-language-scatophiles.

Javascript is shit.

Oh yeah.  I almost stopped enjoying Monty Python and Douglas Adams because of that.

There's a difference between cracking a few jokes and resorting to ``lol zombies mittens science ftw''.

Knuth's writings (particularly the TeXbook) are good examples of how you can make people smile occasionally and teach them how to do things.

Ruby will never improve in that regard. Not until after it's dead.

It's dying right now, by the way. http://blog.headius.com/2012/11/refining-ruby.html

You think programming communities matter because we want to socialise? They matter because it's the fucking community that produces libraries and documentation, you tit.

Name: Anonymous 2012-11-20 18:45

Sure, the community is relevant, but is it Abelson relevant?

Don't change these.
