That reminds me, the worst version of ``Swan Lake'' I've seen is performed in Zurich Opera.
1. Faggot ending.  Odette must kill herself, and if Rotbart dies, it is because other swans eat him afterwards.  Seriously, how difficult is that.  The music is suggesting.  The Petipa's choreography of the last part is explicit and definite.  It's like if Hamlet killed the King and Laertes and lived happily ever after.  Shame.
2. No decorations, plain costumes.  I once said that I wouldn't miss elaborate costumes much if they were replaced with something basic, but oh boy I was wrong.  Decorations too, although I still disapprove of mechanized ones.
The second worth production had an orchestra that lacked a harp.

Meh, too accessible.

Dark moor Swan Lake kind of makes sense.  I am going to publish it and make sure no one ever makes a production like this by monitoring theatrical sources and suing suspected companies in advance.

Imagine this:

Act I.  Can be filled with anything related to white guilt.

Act II.  Freed nigger Siegfried¹ visits a lakeshore rice plantation and discovers a pack of nigger swan girls owned by the evil white person Rotbart.  One of the girls (Odette, leader of the pack) talks to Siegfried and describes the horrors of slavery.  She manages to talk him into marrying her, which, according to Louisiana law, will obligate Siegfried to pay for her ``freedom'' and Rotbart to accept Siegfried's payment.  Rotbart appears, witnesses his nigger girls chatting with a male nigger instead of working, and forcefully takes them back to plantation.

Act III.  Rotbart, being a smart white person, sees danger in Siegfried, a freed nigger who may cause a slave uprising.  He tries to appease Siegfried by bringing him his own daughter (because evil whites betray their own kin, or maybe because mating with nigger is multicultural and thus good).  At first Siegfried is seduced by the white slut and almost succeeds in raping her, but then the real nigger queen appears in the window of his shack, and he is thrown into despair because oh shit nigga completely forgot about Odette and the marriage arrangement.

Act IV.  The characters gather on the plantation.  Nigger Siegfried tries to take nigger Odette by force, but evil white Rotbart argues that he almost raped Odille and thus cannot marry Odette anymore.  Odette acknowledges the failure and drowns herself in the lake, and Siegfried follows.  Nigger swan girls go insane with grief and eat Rotbart.

This makes a fuckton more sense than the original libretto.  Also characters may receive more appropriate nigger names, e. g. Odette will become Ubuntu.  Other improvements are welcome.

Due to the fact that there are no nigger ballerinas blackface will have to be used.  Also silly wigs made from black ropes.

Anybody got a better video?  It's a TV rip, so there must be better rips somewhere, perhaps a DVD even.  God, I love Tsiskaridze, in a mostly non-gay way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2UQMTvbZKQ here is another Zobeide X Golden Slave pas de deux, it looks nice, but I still prefer Kondaurova as Zobeide and Liepas' costumes (especially the headgear from their 1997 film ``Return of the Firebird'').  By the way if you are not into ballet but are into sister incest you can still watch the film because Andris Liepa dances sultan Shahriar and Ilse Liepa dances his wife, and they kiss passionately multiple times during the first act.

No, actually, I don't anymore.  Sodoleva is flexible, sexy and flirtarious, but I still like Liepa a bit more, perhaps due to her somewhat more Oriental looks and precise movement (especially those backward steps which in Sodoleva's performance were considerably lacking), but Igor Kolb caught the Golden Slave image perfectly, in the Nijinsky way:

Again, Nuzimatov executes the steps perfectly, but the image that makes this ballet into a living Eastern fairy tale is not vivid enough.  He is a bit too classical and academic, and Fokin's ballets demand some break from the rigid classical routine (not that I dislike classical ballet and condemn ballet academism, quite to the contrary).

Here is my issue with Vaganova School: they are so busy keeping up their supposed high standards that they miss the talent! True the school is there to produce dancers for Russia, but let's face it, Vaganova is becoming increasingly international with Asian and American students, who truth be told wouldn't pass the entrance exam! The school needs to modernize and look at its new markets: Africa and South America. Hire from outside--not within! Then we can actually call it the Harvard of Ballet!
