Largest prime number

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-20 12:50

I have been thinking for a long time, yet I cannot discover wether there is a prime number that is greater than all the others. What do you think?

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 14:06

Infinity exists. It's real. WTF are you idiots talking about.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 14:17

oh ya jerkoff? have you SEEN infinity before?

I don't need proof; Yahweh has spoken to his chosen people, a glorious message of the neverending sequence.

No, but I've never seen carbon molecules floating around in the air either.

If infinity doesn't exist, how do you measure 'distance', if pythagoras depends on infinity?

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 14:25

If infinity doesn't exist, how many times can I cut a piece of wood in half?

If infinity doesn't exist, why do I drive one?

If infinity doesn't exist, what is n+1?

You have my undying love, /prog/.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 16:31

The world is not a matrix of discrete states. the world is a continuous infinity of points.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 16:33

if infinity doesn't exist, what is Π? what is circle?

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 17:03

>>92
Π denotes product-of-series. It is not a number.

Neither is a circle. What are you on?

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 17:06

if infinity doesnt exist, how many points are there on a line?

Let's assume he means pi.

What's the last number of pi, ``finitist'' faggot?

Guys, its just the shit-spammer again, dont reply.

How do you pronounce your dumb name?

Is it viper? As in, "viper? I barely know her!"
or is it vipper as in, "Ouch! I just caught my foreskin in my zipper!"

Saying that there is an infinite number of primes is not the same thing as saying there is no largest prime.

``There is no largest prime'' is a true statement and completely valid and provable under finitistic mathematics as defined by algebraic topology: a semi-ring representing the natural numbers. ``There are infinite number of primes'' is a false statement under rigorous finitistic mathematics (the only kind which is worth considering as realistic), although informally the word "infinite" could be interpreted as a metaphor for a non-halting recursive process that generates prime numbers.

How do you solve integrals without infinitesimals?

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 19:23

>>104
Oh look, it's that lecture again.

It's true, it would be retarded to call int ``the set of all the integers'' and = the ``pick out the integer to the right side from the infinite set''.

That doesn't mean infinity can't be treated as an useful concept in mathematics, though. You can't simply say irrational numbers are worth shit because they're not infinite after all, you can't simply say imaginary numbers are worth shit because i isn't an actual number, and you can't say negative numbers are worth shit because you can't have -2 apples.

I'm not a finitist and there is no last digit of pi. Stop being silly.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 19:37

The base 10 representation of pi is an approximation of it. Pi in base pi = 1.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 19:41

>>108
People do that for real. And then unit is irrational. Have a nice day.

circumference and radius are never co-rational.
the diagonal of a square and its perimeter are never co-rational.

Define base pi.

Infinitesimals are merely heuristics for the asymptotic boundary conditions of a non-halting recursive process (Archimedes' Method of indivisibles), which can be distilled via the transfer principle.

That doesn't mean infinity can't be treated as an useful concept in mathematics, though.

It hides the complexity of thinking about non-halting recursive processes sure, and gives you a declarative syntax. But the problem is that this syntax has become so entrenched within mathematics that people believe the semantics of infinity is the same thing as the syntax, and that therefore infinity itself must exist in an absolute declarative sense.

People have confused the map for the territory.

This. Infinitists erronously reject the Kantian analytic-synthetic dichotomy of form and object, of syntax and semantics. They believe in the epistemological monism of infinitistic idealism, and reject the dualism of mathematics as a language for computational/mathematical realism.

Infinitists are Mathematical Marxists who live in a fantasy realm. Like an extremist cult, they indoctrinate new zealots with their Dialectic of Infinity.

But if you ask me, the finitists are the ones who look like an extremist cult to me.

Christians are to infinitists as Platonic/Aristotelian philosophers and gnostics are to finitists.

Christianity had its beginnings as a cult until expanded to enslave much of Europe for centuries. But it was eventually exposed as the ideological canard that is, when reality could no longer be ignored with the advent of empiricism and logical positivism. Now Christianity is dying, with most of its not even seriously practicing it.

Like Christians, Infinitists will soon no longer be able to ignore reality as computationalism and algorithmic information theory become the dominant paradigm in the sciences.
