Why the do people use PHP when JSP exists? It kills PHP in just about every metric: runtime performance, separation of code, portability, and throughput.

The other alternative is ASP.NET if you're stuck on Microsoft shite. I still don't understand why SLOW AS FUCK PHP is still so widely used.

Because PHP is shit and web developers love shit.

And I'm seriously considering using JSP now for my ENTERPRISE projects. I'm not sure what to use for my toy projects, though. I'm torn between FIOC, Ruby and Common Lispu.

PHP is full of bugs and WTFs. It helps when trying to upload shellcode onto someone else's machine. Think of the hackers, guys!

It's even harder when there's an entire JVM to manage. There's also the bloat of Java in general to contend with. PHP is tiny in comparison and easy to install and configure.

PHP is shit, I'm kinda stuck with it but it's pretty shit. GD2 is undefined buggy piece of shit. PHP core devs are insecure shits. irc.freenode.net ##php's ops are insecure little shits. Web apps are also the biggest piece of shits.

I miss building curses apps.

Perl > Java > everythingelse > PHP.

Perl is a toy language. Its type system especially is insane. In the syntax department, it is ugly and inconsistent and has sugar for useless things but not for useful things. The entirety of Perl reeks of extreme worse-is-better design, which means no design at all. The Perl cult abuses concepts such as DWIM, TIMTOWTDI or the UNIX philosophy to justify such attitude, which explains why CPAN is a mountain of shit.
But it's even worse than that. I can understand the use of a poor language if it has some decisive advantage like the performance of the code generated by C compilers. That's not the case for Perl. Its implementation is ridiculously slow and its garbage collector is a joke. There really isn't any reason to use it.
Stop using that horrible language.

The JVM start-up is a non-issue on servers. Leave it on forever and you can have as many servlets as you can running on it. PHP may be "easy to set up" but in practice is a lot more bloated than Java servlets.

Tautology is tautological.

Hi I'm new to JVM. I want to create a toy language on top of it, like Scala or Clojure. Any pointers on where I should begin? Thanks. PS: What is a servlet? Is that the JAVA lingo for server process?

There are no pointers in the JVM.
