A good way to start?

Name: Anonymous 2012-07-24 13:47

I would appreciate a quick answer and some second opinions about this: i'm interested in learning programming (decided to start with Java) and after a long search I've come to the conclusion that this is how I should start (note: completely beginner):

1. http://see.stanford.edu/see/courseinfo.aspx?coll=824a47e1-135f-4508-a5aa-866adcae1111 for an overview
2. Java, A Beginner's Guide, 5th Edition
3. http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/
4. Thinking In Java 4th edition

Am I going the right way or just being a stupid dick? Also what worries me is the outdated data especially in the last one (2006). Any advice, guys?

There is a difference between learning programming and learning a programming language.

Well, that's generally what Sahami is talking about in those videos.

Head First Java and that video course is the best way to learn Java and OO

Thanks. Heard some negative comments about that book, but gonna check it out. I suppose there's enough stuff for a while in those two.

Jump from language to language and do random shit until you start to see the patterns underneath the languages.

I'll try to remember that ;)

W-why would you even want to do either? It is counterproductive to learn such harmful shit.

oh I dont know, like maybe if you want a job or something, considering just about every single programming language in common use has OO accept C and Lua, so it might be a good idea to at least understand what it does.

programming jobs that require OOP are usually the lowest of low

Still better than scrubbing toilets.

Read SICP.  You won't regret it.

Name: Anonymous 2012-07-25 20:23

Do what >>8 says. Instead of Common Lisp, you can also learn Scheme or Clojure. Solve the problems on 4clojure.com. After you're done it's time for Haskell.

Do NOT waste your time with Java. Even scrubbing toilets is better than damaging your brain with that shit.

Yeah, I agree, don't waste your time learning Java.

Friends don't let friends read SICP.

That is correct, a friend doesn't leave a friend read it alone, they work on it together and playfully compete to see who completes the exercises first.

Don't change these.
