One topic I still couldn't manage to find is about the exact origin of the ``faggot quotes'', or at least why it became part of /prog/'s lore.

Most notibly they're used in a) the Sussman's email to /prog/^¹ and b) the FUQIN ANGRY PROGRAMMER RANT.^² First use of the term ``faggot quotes'' seems to be early 2008^³, according to Google. Someone with /prog/ should go find some earlier source, maybe.
