3d Engine

Name: Anonymous 2011-10-08 20:49

/g/, Amateur game dev here, in the market for an engine. I'm actually in school right now (about 8 months in) for game development studying C++, dx, opengl, etc etc, but I'd like to get my hands on an engine and start churning away.

I've been eyeing Torque3d for a while, but I don't know much about it other than I remember Torque being used for Tribes 2. I noticed that a full license is only $99 which includes full C++ source, no royalties, but I was hoping to get some opinions on the Torque engine.

I also checked out UDK a while back, and I wasn't really too pleased with UDK's dev studio and the difficulties of not only using my own IDE with their UnrealScript, but using UnrealScript itself. UDK seemed more of a "Here, take Unreal 3 and add your own models and lol hue hue u maek ur own gaem!".

Not sure if Torque is like that or what. AFAIK the $99 license you can get from UDK does not offer the full source of the engine like torque, and does include royalties on profits.

Any ideas on either of them? Or any other options? I checked out Unity, but I'm not a huge C#/Java/.net fan

You've done your research and have an opinion of the options available. Wtf else is there to talk about.

You want to churn out games but don't want to use the engines that are made to churn out games. Go fuck yourself.

Go for HeroCloud. It's free and powerful.

clearly asking for outsider opinions on the options available, if anyone has anything they like or don't like about either

Ogre is powerful and really really big and ugly. Like an Ogre.

Irrlicht is pretty nice; it's also fast and free.
The only downside is sepples, though that's a given for most game/3D engines.

yes

Just get Ogre - It's free and it fucking works. It's not like you'll be actually creating anything serious in the next few months/years.

Using Ogre is like building a two-story house out of bricks.
Using Torque is like building two one-story bricks out of houses.

Using Lisp is like building a one-story brick out of bricks.

unity3d. it's freaking ownage. and it's cross platform. You also get to choose which language you'd like to program the game in. it doesn't support 2D but I assume you will only need 3D. You can get the free version which exports to PC and the interwebz but if you pay moar money you get more export options.
also dubs get if someone hasn't taken it...

Unity sucks because you're forced to use a shit language to write it in,  C#/Javascript.

I'd rather .NOT

crossplatform
if you consider "windows XP and Windows 7" crossplatform, then sure.

but if you pay moar money you get more export options.
apart from the crossplatform lie, that's another reason /NOT/ to use Unity3D

you guys are butthurts. unity isn't that bad. aside from only being able to use C# javascript(unityscript) its really not as bad as you fagstorms make it.

I'm all for the CLR. Portability is important and I think Unity fails that one. C♭ blows, but other CLR languages are good. If the engine forces you to use a language without interop features that's just terrible by design.

Don't change these.
