IS THERE ANY GRAPHICAL EXPERTS IN HEAR?
Look I have this picture, it's almost B/W but it has greyscale tones in it... I want to turn it into a black(greyscale) on transparent picture so i can replace the white by the brown background-color on my website.
don't know about the gimp, but in photoshop you want to make a layer mask, and paste in the original image into the layer mask. then, invert the layer mask. now, the black in the image is opaque and white is transparent.

Delivered.

I have done a shortened version because I did it off the top of my head. The lyrics are the same all the way through anyway. But that is basically what I'm like when I go busking.

You confused the beginning with that of another song, which is what struck me most (in the original there are no chords, only a 3 note solo). Leaving that aside and the shitty quality of your microphone, great stuff.
On a related note, I've been wondering -- isn't there a way to adaptively measure the noise and unwanted modulations/resonances that a [microphone]+[acquisition board] pair adds to a signal and then produce a filter that attempts to undo that effect? To partly answer my own question, that would probably require a speaker for which the added noise/modulation/resonance must already be known (but to obtain that data you would need a calibrated or very high quality microphone), or a really high-quality speaker. So basically, I suppose it's a chicken-and-egg problem.

The beginning I actually realise now is me playing the intro twice round instead of once, it's not from a different song. Yeah, the microphone is shit, I'm just using my netbook's built in one.
If you're on about noise cancellation, then the first thing that comes to mind is the way that people remove the vocals from tunes they want to sample, either to keep the vocals or the accappella. What you do is find a section of the song without the vocals, and invert the signal. Then add this to the section with the vocals, and the waves basically cancel each other out, leaving what was different in the second part. I guess you could use something like that (just blueskying here). Oh wait, you're not talking about hiss, you're talking about static from buzzy wires etc...well maybe you could do the same thing  have a recording of just the static then invert it and try that stuff...you would have to zoom in as far as fuck to the very millisecond to line it up though, and in fact I suspect that wouldn't work at all becaquse I'm talking out of my arse.

I thought it hadn't posted that comment so amended it slightly and posted it again. What the fuck is up with the text boards over the last couple of days?

Obviously won't work, for very obvious reasons (adding one random noise to the negation of another random noise will get you *surprise surprise* more random noise). The adaptive part of my post means that the "high quality" speaker plays various sounds/samples and compares that to what the microphone receives, trying to inference as much as possible about the various frequency response curves and acoustics of the microphone. Sure, it can't be perfect, but it'll be better than shit.
Some people, when confronted with a cover request/challenge, think "oh I know, I'll just use my netbook's internal microphone". Now they have one problem , but it's a really big one
It's the only microphone in the house that can pick up me playing and singing at the same time, the other way to record is using the vocal mic I have, and recording the guitar separately. I'd prefer to do things all at once for more of a live feel...besides, this isn't going on itunes or anything, it's just a scratchpad to show people here.
Yeah, I guess if the noise is purely random it wouldn't work. I've tried removing hiss with parametric EQ's before, but most of the time it affects the rest of the bandwidth too. You can correct around it a little though, and get something better than you started with.

Well, I just looked up that song...beautiful...the guy uses a capo I think (look it up if you don't know) to play it, and I think I've left mine at my folks, making this double hard bastard level to play without it. I reckon I'll be able to do it though...the verse isn't just your normal chords strumming, some really hard shapes (well, without a capo anyway), and that's given me the most trouble, but again I think I've got it. Just going to need to remember vocal melody now...when I said I can pick up a song straight away, I meant the chords, and I did know a "bluff" version of it straight away. I've almost memorised the vocals too though...but I reckon if I haven't got it down in the next twenty minutes it will be too late for me to record it, neighbours etc. >>63
Stop bleeding from your ass every time I post. It's quite unseemly.

I ended up recording it in a different key instead to get round that, which kinda threw me a little as it confused me with the vocal changes. Also, I was trying to sing it quietly so as not to bother the neighbours, which means my voice is a little weaker. It's past 11pm now so I can't do a better take.
Fuck me, I forgot about when I dropped the octave down on the first chorus. That sounds fucking terrible, I should have done another take. I will do next time it's not too late to play.

The files expire after a while though, don't they?
I've clicked on links a few times to mediafire and the stuff is gone. Thought I'd try this place and see if it lasts. If not, more's the better as that last recording was fucking terrible.
