Script tasklist fails

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-22 7:29

Start a cmd.
Type "tasklist /?".
Note the syntax for writing filters such as IMAGENAME.
Write simple line of code to see if the internet browser is running: tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq iexplore.exe"
Get error message: "The search filter cannot be recognized."
Scour the net for why this is happening.
Discover lots of people it works just fine for.
Consult documentation at Microsoft.com.
Read the example: tasklist /fi "USERNAME ne NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /fi "STATUS eq running"
Type the exact example.
Get the error message: "Microsoft users can't even check what processes are running from a simple prompt - have a free dildo."

Do I have to get XP Professional for this to work, or something?

I know how to work AROUND the problem, but shouldn't this basic command work in the firt place?

I felt so hurt by that that I went to kill myself, but being a loser, I failed.

CMD is a joke.
How can anyone work with that, let alone write something useful with it?
I never used powershell so I'll just assume that it's M$ crap too.

Microsoft thrives on lusers buying their OS and having a big market share.
99% of their users don't even know about CMD, let alone use it.

Take this heed of advice:
If you want to write something useful, use whatever real programming you want, even LISP is better than "CMD"...

cmd sucks. ms-powershell is the right tool for the job. is a language inspired by what perl does in unix, with .net support, and is great for writing system utilities.

No, really, you are a mamzer.

Both your commands run perfectly here (it is XP professional though). Maybe you should determine which tasklist you are using (using the ``which'' utility from GnuWin32) and, like, post its size or something. Also, providing the actual error message rather than your sexually frustrated reinterpretation might help.

Yeah, I've read that it's an XP Professional/Home issue by now, but what's confusing was that HALF of the tasklist commands work, and Microsoft documentation doesn't say anything about this command being nerfed for Home users.
I was hoping to get a standalone script working smoothly on all versions of Windows XP/Vista/7, but no such luck.

Also, the error message was obviously still "The search filter cannot be recognized.".

What seems to be lacking in general, is DOS documentation for XP Home editions, which means that Microsoft figured you'd have to be a PROFESSIONAL in order to abandon the Windows GUI and want to open a DOS prompt.
The undocumented crippling of basic commands will of course also severly limit third party scripts in unexpected ways, but why would any Home user need to install or run any "PROFESSIONAL" scripts? *sarcasm*
The next time I buy a Windows edition, I'll dress up in a suit, and serve the staff my business card, stating "Professional DOS programmer at private business company".

I'm not interested in managing non-POSIX systems. And neither should you.

I play computer games - there's no avoiding it.

>>14
You SHOULD be interested in non-POSIX systems when your gf calls you up, telling you that her harddrive is nearly full, you find out that the problem is DivX being idiots, that they have publicized an official (but non-POSIX) batch which "solves" this problem, but that it's outdated and needs to be rewritten.
You COULD write a completely SEPARATE code, but that's taking the easy way out and you know it.

How about denying any knowledge of non-Posix systems so you have a convenient excuse to not be local tech support. This is one of the reasons why I accept only free software.

If I need to run some Windows software on my computers, I will just do without.

Isn't Windows licensed at the higher level of POSIX compliance than Linux? I know for sure that OSX is, but about Windows (with SFU of course)?

Okay, fine: Ex-girlfriend/lover.

>>17
1. No, I'm not going to have her look around for other guys just because she would think I'd be incompetent.
2. I'm using that computer as well, and she's already blaming me enough because she believes my stuff is taking up too much space.
3. DivX IS free.
4. I actually tried my best talking her into getting Ubuntu, but her computer came preinstalled with Windows without extra charge, and she didn't want me tinkering with something that wasn't broken.

Dump her sorry neurotypical ass and get a neckbearded girlfriend... if you can find one, that is. Hehehe.

I just use pv/prcview for this.

Dude, just let her find some loser to fix her windows. If she's with you just because she thinks you are competent at solving her problems, it's not love, it's prostitution. You gotta learn to say "no" and "fuck off, I'm off-duty".

2. I'm using that computer as well, and she's already blaming me enough because she believes my stuff is taking up too much space.
She's probably right, get a job and buy your own damned hard drive (and LUKS-encrypt it (don't forget to leave an unencrypted /boot partition unless you want to boot from a USB drive every time (which is actually the most secure you can get)) so she can't touch your delicious loli cat pictures).

4. I actually tried my best talking her into getting Ubuntu, but her computer came preinstalled with Windows without extra charge, and she didn't want me tinkering with something that wasn't broken.
Oh so you proposed a solution (along with full technical support) and she didn't accept it? That ungrateful bitch; let her pay the price of her own foolishness when she has to pay for technical support and antiviruses and whatnot.

1. You should be alpha enough to let your girl go to other men and trust her to not do anything regrettable when she returns. If you have to watch her 24 hours a day, it's probably best just to let her free.
2. Get a hard drive to store your personal data.
3. Divx is non-free. Free software is a matter of user freedom and not a matter of monetary value http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html .
4. Ubuntu has a policy of recommending non-free software. I'd recommend Blag or GNewSense

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-26 6:49

I got your hard drive right here:
*grabs dick*

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-26 7:04

1. I AM alpha enough to let her try out other men, and she spent a few months trying them out before concluding I was indeed more of a man than anyone else could ever be, but I'm not going to feign incompetence to avoid writing a simple DOS batch.
2. Don't need to. Just had to compare the size of my folder with the bloated every-increasing size of Windows, to convince her.
3. Yes, but unless you are going to show me a browser plug-in that will modify the HTML code of video sharing sites to use a GNU licanced video player, I'm stuck with DivX.
4. MY gf settles for (free) Flash and Java, and that's it. Also, gNewSense has been disturbingly dead for 2 years.
