Year of the Linux Desktop

I have analyzed linux kernel source codes and come to inevitable conclusion that 2012 is the year. Spread the word.

At midnight of june 10,2012 Microsoft will release Windows 8. It will be a spectacular ram-hogging failure.
The crowds will boo. Hardware manufacturers which didn't have the guts will finally break and switch to linux in droves.
There will be much gnashing of the teeth, and only those already invested in linux will survive the year. Be prepared.

Except that Windows 8 will be released in January of 2012, and the public beta of it will be available at the PDC this September.

Also, I doubt it to be much of a failure, it's more of an incremental update to Windows 7 which a focus on better stability, performance, and resource use.

Microsoft is starting to emulate Apple when it comes to OS updates.

That said, Linux adoption is still growing, and Windows adoption is still stagnating. Kind of hard to gain ground in the OS market when you already have the biggest share.

Windows 8 is nothing more than Windows 7 with a bunch of more ``streamlined'' features. It's still the same old kernel, NT, that has existed since the very early 90's. You could say the modern line of Windows OSes began and is heavily derived from early 90's NT, with small (and bigger) improvements each version (what are they up to now? 6.2?)

We don't know that yet.

There is a beta, some accessible to developers, and some you can find leaked on the internet. If you thought Windows 7 was streamlined Vista, Windows 8 is streamlined Windows 7 (meaning even smaller changes).

Following that logic, Linux is still the same old kernel it was back in the 90s with small (and bigger) improvements each version (what are they up to now? 2.6?).

Same APIs still work, same kernel design, and so on. Yes, there are many changes, but compatibility is paramount, much more so than with Linux. Hell, you can still run some modern applications in Windows 95 due to the shared ABI.

Linux had some major change that broke compatibility. 2.4 -> 2.6?

>There are barely any official statements on the next Windows, except for Mr. Ballmer’s statement that it will be Microsoft’s riskiest product.
YEAR OF LINUX DESKTOP IS NEAR. REPENT AND FORMAT.

Is this going to be like the rapture?

It's risky in that they're supporting ARM as a native desktop architecture and they're trying to move it on to low-cost mobile platforms and netbooks. It's also risky because of the fact that it will have an app store.

It's also getting a community driven package manager for open source software, called CoApp. http://coapp.org/

That will only happen if Canonical someone ensures that the 11.10 release isn't a cluster fuck like 11.04 is.
