It's really quite simple. A typical programmer is a huge dork who spends three consecutive weekend learning 6502 assembly in his mom's basement so he can write a patch to show Samus naked for the duration of the first Metroid game. Being a male, he has evolved a certain megalomaniacal attitude that makes him think he is super-leet and knows everything about programming, so when the professor is trying to tell everyone how to show that the languages accepted by NFAs are exactly the regular languages, he, knowing that he is already so very smart, spends the time bragging about his latest exploits that nobody really cares about anyway.
Meanwhile, the female programmer in the same university class, is actually listening to the fucking professor. But when lab comes around and she wants to do a search and replace in a pipe, she asks if there's a Unix command for that. The nerd who patched Metroid is sitting next to her and thinks it's awesome that there's a real girl there, and he wants to show off how smart he is so he can get laid for the first time in, well, ever. So he tells her, "Just use sed. Duh. You don't know about sed?" And he makes her feel like a complete retard.
Then she goes to the professor because she's thinking about dropping the class -- because the other people are so obviously smarter than her that they have to tell her such obvious things like what "sed" does.
Of course, the professor is like, "WTF? This woman is like the #2 student and she always aces the tests but she feels like she's an utter moron." Five of the other women in the class didn't talk to the professor and transfer out. Meanwhile the geek's grades slowly drop because he never studies, so that by the time he's a senior he's scraping by, but he graduates with a BS in CS anyway. The behavior of the men in the class degrades further as the fewer women there are in the class, the worse the men are at talking to them.

Really, it's the asshats who expect everyone to be huge dorks like them. You wouldn't expect someone in inorganic chemistry to, say, do X-ray crystallography in their bedroom closet, but for some reason women who come into CS programs without having already memorized all the Unix shell commands are treated like morons by their male peers who are just trying to get in their pants anyway.
College isn't about fucking initiative. PhD programs are about initiative and doing your own thing. Master's level stuff is mostly more of the same stuff you got in undergrad except getting a C might as well be getting an F, so they expect you to learn the whole damn curriculum rather than just enough to get by.
Undergraduate courses really are about being told how to figure shit out. You can slide by all the way through junior year sleeping through class and never opening the goddamn textbook because the professors always hold your hand. Senior year you get 400-level, which is kind of nice but it's just watered down classes from grad programs, if you're lucky. (P.S., if you're the 5% of students that actually has initiative, try taking 500-level classes when you're an undergrad.)
And then there's the culture. We know that Prague is just an outpost for /jp/. You just don't want to see the tomato in the mirror: the reason there are no women in CS is because the men are people like you and me. Just try inviting a woman to your dorm room, it smells like Cheetos and you've got a shit-tonne of PVC miniatures showing their panties at you. And on the inside hook of your closet is hanging a fucking semen-stained seifuku.
Women are irrational, that's all there is to that. Their heads are full of cotton, hay and rags.
They're nothing but exasperating, irritating, vacillating, calculating, agitating, maddening and infuriating hags.

That doesn't happen here. Almost all of the women, while still not knowing much, get a false sense of superiority. And their grades are good but that isn't saying much. Some of their lab assignments don't work properly but instead of asking the professor what they did wrong they just change the output and smile nicely hoping he won't figure it out. It's happened several times.
A woman in my CS class copied my incomplete homework and when she couldn't complete it, she asked for help to me, which was very dumb because that was when I realized she had copied my homework.
>>34 Just because a few women are very good doesn't mean that on average they're as good as men. Not from what I've seen at least.
You can`t do statistics with such a small sample.

I see. Your reasoning doesn't make much sense, though, since having a preference for some type of personality doesn't mean that the person with the preference is going to be like that.
This raises an interesting question, actually: with homosexual (and heterosexual, but to a lesser degree) attraction, what is the difference between being attracted to someone because of their traits and being attracted to some traits and wanting to incorporate them into your own personality?

In my experience you're almost entirely correct, except for the male students berating female students for not knowing stuff they were never taught: we usually berated each other for that, but with the girls we were always really helpful and always took the time to patiently teach them shit they didn't know (which still didn't get us laid, but whatever). And the ratio of girls who dropped out was really the same as the guys', but as there were so few girls to start with it stood out more. Also, the girls did seem to be significatively less interested in programming than the guys, regardless of the quality of their code.
the male mind works better in a programming environment/situation - it's the way the man's mind is wired.
women, not all, tend to gloss over the details in the assumption that the listener (this time, the compiled program) jumps to the conclusions the woman is aluding to.
men usually think linearly and as such, are able to conceptualize all the instructions/steps required to get from storing the registers that were handed to you, to returning control to the calling function.
The percentage of actually good coders is probably the same across both sexes; that is, a very small fraction. When you multiply this very small fraction by another very small fraction (the fraction of females into programming), you get a very very tiny fraction. Don't forget that most programmers will, sadly, never get past using Java or C++ and writing EnterpriseFactoryFactory code. I hate to quote Randall, but xkcd #385 works much better for programming than maths; we are used to swimming through an ocean of shitty male coders; yet when we encounter a female coder, we somehow assume that the statistics will be different. Guess what? They aren't.
