Honest question

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-30 12:44

Being that fewer women are programmers, i have the theory that programming is a manly occupation.

Being that, it could be possible that programmers is one of the gayless profession of all???

I was thinking about that while i was inserting a suppository into my anus this morning.

Sounds like you know from personal experience.

I see. Your reasoning doesn't make much sense, though, since having a preference for some type of personality doesn't mean that the person with the preference is going to be like that.

This raises an interesting question, actually: with homosexual (and heterosexual, but to a lesser degree) attraction, what is the difference between being attracted to someone because of their traits and being attracted to some traits and wanting to incorporate them into your own personality?

In my experience you're almost entirely correct, except for the male students berating female students for not knowing stuff they were never taught: we usually berated each other for that, but with the girls we were always really helpful and always took the time to patiently teach them shit they didn't know (which still didn't get us laid, but whatever). And the ratio of girls who dropped out was really the same as the guys', but as there were so few girls to start with it stood out more. Also, the girls did seem to be significatively less interested in programming than the guys, regardless of the quality of their code.

the male mind works better in a programming environment/situation - it's the way the man's mind is wired.

women, not all, tend to gloss over the details in the assumption that the listener (this time, the compiled program) jumps to the conclusions the woman is aluding to.

men usually think linearly and as such, are able to conceptualize all the instructions/steps required to get from storing the registers that were handed to you, to returning control to the calling function.

or so i've seen.

The percentage of actually good coders is probably the same across both sexes; that is, a very small fraction. When you multiply this very small fraction by another very small fraction (the fraction of females into programming), you get a very very tiny fraction. Don't forget that most programmers will, sadly, never get past using Java or C++ and writing EnterpriseFactoryFactory code. I hate to quote Randall, but xkcd #385 works much better for programming than maths; we are used to swimming through an ocean of shitty male coders; yet when we encounter a female coder, we somehow assume that the statistics will be different. Guess what? They aren't.
