Colleges.

I'm transferring to a college to major in programming. I've been doing HTML/CSS and some PHP, and I recognize that's pussy shit. I want the real deal. Good college suggestions? Maybe even in Colorado if you're feeling regional. thanks.

as in what?

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-18 15:16

Seriously. Where did you guys go (if you went) and how'd you like it?

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-18 15:18

UF, it was alright. A ton of bullshit hoops to jump through though.

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-18 15:20

I went to Royal Holloway, University of London

The only benefits of (college|university) are

1) Math classes
2) Diploma

You can learn programming by yourself. And if you want some money, get certifications on stuff like Oracle|Cisco|Redhat.

Here we only had one math class in the first semester of year 1. After that, nothing. So I assume the diploma is probably the best bet.

I'm doing Maths & CS. Sometimes I wonder if I was a bit too arrogant to think I could do University-level maths ;__;

You major in Computer Science, not Programming.

Yeah sometimes i think if Calculus IV is _really_ needed....

Anyway, i never got past Calculus II, fucking trigonometric integrals....

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-18 16:38

>>13
You had a IV?  The highest our college had was a III.  What did they teach?

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-18 16:44

>>13
It surely isn't that hard!

I'm only a first-year, I'm struggling with Analysis ;__;
And I'm from the UK, so I suppose that the numbers won't correspond at all.

So would I still major in Computer Sciences if I wanted to program video games? Legitimate quest, I'm not just some dumb ass that likes video games and wants to get paid for playing them.

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-18 17:22

Let me fix that for you:
I'm not just some dumb ass that likes video games and wants to get paid for making them.
and to that I respond, “yes you are”.

Give up on the video game designer dream. Get an easy, high paying website administrator job and make video games as a hobby.

They will not teach you how to program in college. Programming is something that can only be learned from self-study.

Attending college for undergraduate study of any exact science is quite unnecessary given the availability of learning materials.

All books and tools can be bought/downloaded/pirated and used in one's own home.

OP here, I've decided not to do programming because it will probably be too hard. I'm going to burn all my electronics and go live in the mountains. Thanks for showing me the light.

Any advice for people who don't play video games and want to learn EVERYTHING? I'd just like to know where to go online and what to dl so I can learn on my own. I don't have the best frame of reference to sort out the good from the bad when it comes to learning materials.

First: Land of Lisp, Common Lisp
Second: Practical Common Lisp, Common Lisp (obviously)
Third: SICP, Scheme.

During these three phases you'll need to program for several hours a day. And you need to have fun

This, except for
And you need to have fun
Scheme took all defun out of Lisp.

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-19 5:54

Video games are fun, you should play them!

Read SICP then K&R. Or if you just want to make some quick money I guess you could copy paste PHP examples all day long.

Yes, instead of earning a PhD, you can earn a PhP! LOL!!!!

Programming is for scrubs. Networking master race here.

While you losers get outsourced and your shitty field continues to stagnate, I'll be working a nice sysadmin position, and eventually there will be an explosion of good contract jobs available for me once people realize that we need really need to convert to IPv6.

There will soon be more networked devices than people. IPv4 is limited to around 4 billion addresses. There are more than 4 billion people in the world, and there will be multiple networked devices per person (aside from a couple people in impoverished countries). When that happens, we can either a) abuse the fuck out of DHCP and NAT, or b) convert to IPv6.

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-20 17:57

>>35
We already did that.  It works fine.

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-20 18:04

>>36
No it doesn't. VOIP and console gaming are an example of something that should work fine but doesn't as a result of NAT abuse. Soon enough, your ISP will put you on a NAT and charge you extra to get a real IP because IP's are getting exhausted, yo.

Name: Anonymous 2011-01-21 5:34

>>37
I wish my ISP'd give me IPv6 connectivity soon enough instead.

Don't change these.
