Is this book still any good (like K&R) or is it too outdated now to learn from?

Here's an Amazon review:
How is it that a book from 1984 based on a legacy Unix system, describing some tools that no one would now use, can still not only be in print but actually recommended?
In introducing you to the Unix system, from simple shell commands, to shell scripts, to awk and sed programming, and to Unix applications programming, not to mention the best introduction to lex and yacc, the authors develop real applications and teach you how to THINK in Unix terms: develop small components that fit and interact with each other to build larger and larger and more complex applications.
But it's more than just thinking in Unix terms: it's how to structure and approach programs and scripts no matter what environment you are in.
Stevenson's _Advanced Programming In the Unix Environment_ is an excellent book for coverage. I have it too. But _The Unix Programming Environment_ is a book for developing your software mentality in a way that no other book that I've read even approaches.
After 20 years as a Unix programmer, including kernel development of several Unix operating systems, this book still remains on my shelf.
I think that's pretty glowing.

The C in it is pre ansi for example, but it doesn't really matter. I think it's one of the best books which demonstrates the original (ie not gnu crap) unix philosophy. Definitely worth a read. For pdfs and stuff there's library genesis: http://gen.lib.rus.ec/ but this is one that's worth getting a physical copy of imho.

GNU's Not UNIX, so why would it have the same philosophy?

Anyway, I sage because it's a reflex here.
I was asking >>29, as in, why do [you] think the UNIX philosophy has changed into some sort of GNU philosophy?
It hasn't. The unix philosophy still exists, but the largest group of people using a unix like system are people who use gnu userland, where tools are bloated with many options. Perl also represents this philosophy when compared to sed/awk + Bourne shell. No longer are tools for doing one thing well, but every tool can do everything crappily and idiosyncratically. But the latter philosophy isn't really a philosophy at all afaics. Features are added with no yardstick for inclusion or not other than the particular current whims of the maintainer.

>>35
Are you trying to say that we should use BSD or plan9 userspace instead?

Name: Anonymous 2011-05-24 22:55

>>35
So what would be the difference in writing a new program that has a specific desired feature as opposed to extending a program to include features that at minimal, one user (such as the maintainer) would use.

In this regard, I would side with the GNU philosophy that it's ok to extend should the extensions not cause any major conflict; tools are tools and if we can make it better, why not make it better?

Because Worse is Better.

Name: Anonymous 2011-05-25 8:46

>>37

Additional maintenance burden due to more features. Additional possibility for bugs due to interactions with other features. Additional difficulty of learning the tool. Someone new to the tool won't know that feature is only actually useful for one person until they try and use it and realise it's over-specific to that one person's use case and in fact will only work with the combination of options that one person uses.
