I hate you, /prog/.

Name: Anonymous 2010-10-15 10:40

You've broken me. I can't even look at languages like PHP, C++ or Java without chuckling in my mind, while I can't really explain why I dislike them even to myself. I intuitively perceive other programmers who haven't used Haskell or Lisp as inferior, even though they are most likely more productive or successful than me. I find the phrase "hax my anus" mildly amusing.
You've broken me, /prog/, but the worst thing is that you left me. You left me, and now all I have left is this petty excuse for a textboard.

cool story bro

I can do PHP, C++ and Java just fine. You just suck.

I disagree. There are numerous things wrong with each of those languages, and the mentality of those who like them.

- PHP started off as a macro language and slowly grew into a Perl knock-off (even though its designers stated they didn't want to be Perl) with no overall design goals involved, and leaving everything in for backwards compatibility. They also have retarded function names that don't relate to their purpose at all, like explode and implode. As a result, it is a total mess.

- http://yosefk.com/c++fqa/ has been created so nobody has to argue against Sepples any more.

- Java claims to be object-oriented (but still has primitive types) and has many extraneous features. Other problems include assignment by reference (meaning you have to create a clone() method in order to manually reassign every attribute). It's also quite simplistic.

So, there you go, if you ever need to explain why they're bad, just remember all that.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on any of these languages. This post may be entirely false.

I can tolerate sepples. php and java is slow tier for me.

>http://yosefk.com/c++fqa/ has been created so nobody has to argue against Sepples any more.

was it updated since C++0x and clang? Because it repairs some points.

It's not about liking these languages, it's about getting shit done, even if the result is ugly.

I can't even look at languages like PHP, C++ or Java without puking a little in my mouth,

None of those relate to /prog/ at all. You sound more like a naïve child than a cynical EXPERT PROGRAMMER.

I can't even look at language like Lisp and Haskell without laughing a little inside.
--fixed that for you

Not exactly the case here: I looked to other languages because the current ones that I knew at the time disappointed me in many ways. I wanted to do things without having to write ugly hacks - things which should be very simple in principle (and they did turn out to be), yet in some languages they require massive hacks and are still not quite there.

As for PHP, writing in it just makes me hate myself. Java I can tolerate, but I find boring, while C++ can be a headache if you're using the more advanced features without a complete understanding of them (and sometimes acquiring the knowledge may be time better spend doing other things). In the end, I found Lisp and C the languages I'm most comfortable with, depending on what I'm writing (a hint of the platform's assembly can be fine too). ML (and derivates) did however open my mind to some very interesting ideas, which I still make use of, even if I find myself favoring dynamicly typed languages to staticly typed ones for general purpose code.

Yes; I was raised by /prog/, hence my unreasonable prejudices towards the aforementioned languages.

>>3
It's not about not being able to do them, but about choosing C over C++ even when I could really do with the features of the latter.

If there's a feature of C++ that you can't easily implement in C, you probably shouldn't be using it.

Why is it always the people who only know terrible languages who want to shoehorn pseudocode into every conversation?

I assume it's some kind of compensation.

If sepples is so bad, why does
/prog/
recommend PyQt?  Qt is like the poster child for C++ development.
