does anyone here work? all pro programmers I know are university professors (real programmers not web dev assholes, but I would do it if it made good money ^_^).
Is there any hope to find work locally? Specific software that people would hire some no-name asshole like me to do?
I work as an independent contractor for a software shop that does mobile/embedded stuff for the government. I didn't go looking for the job, the job came looking for me because I'm just that awesome. I set my own hours, work over the Internet, and I make a comfortable income.
But before I was awesome, back when I was fresh out of university, I used to give head write code as an intern at Autodesk. The pay was kind of shit, and I was treated as a grunt, but it lead to better things.
I work, and have worked... I was a programmer at companies full of programmers. Does >>1 think that there are no companies out there that produce software and sell it? There are a lot of CS grads that companies are forced to weed through in interviews, but if you know what you're doing, you'll get hired.

Are you telling me that $95K/year plus bonuses is not a comfortable income? Last time I checked, studies have reported that people who make over $75K/year are more content and happier with their lives than those who do not, adjusting for health issues.
Remember, I ultimately do work for the government, and they're always throwing money around.
I hope you enjoy working as a web monkey on php sites making $35K/year.

what is this bullshit thread. do you live in montana or something...there are programming jobs all over the place
>>17 You must live under a rock or something. Or in a third-world country. In fact, where I live, people complain that many positions cannot be filled because of a lack of qualified personnel. This trend will continue as more old people retire in the future.

How much of $95000 do they actually get? I kind of feel bad about making less than $30k/year (that is, I get less than $30k to spend, after all taxes and other enslavement), but in my shit country it's an ok pay.

Come to Maryland. Program for military. Pass full existence clearance anus investigation.
Pass full existence clearance anus investigation.
You only get clearance if investigation determines that your anus exists?

all pro programmers I know are university professors
Uni. profs != programmers
Uni prof == educators, and therefore don't actually contribute to society except on a secondary basis by training the next generation of people that will actually work for a living.
Teaching is a nice racket, but it's not a full time job. Nor is the Higher Calling® that people make it out to be.
I don't know where you faggots go to school, but the professors at my school primarily focus on research. These motherfuckers don't worry about petty syntax or language, they only care about finding dat element in the array in less than 0.00001 second.

I have to pay around 30% in taxes in my tax bracket, so it's closer to $60K take home. However, because I'm an independent contractor, I am essentially a small business owner, so many of my "business" expenses I can write off. I pay closer to 15-20% in taxes.
