Why COBOL is still the best language for...

Name: Anonymous 2010-09-17 11:25

... huge ammount of transactions????

I've always wondered. In my company, COBOL programmers tend to have higher salaries (they are older, too), But the thing is, technically, ¿why is superior to other technologies?

PS: I hate COBOL. Anyone sane does.

No exceptions

COBOL is the new Java.

No exceptions.
All speed.

COBOL 2002 is a decent language, and COBOL 1985 was usable. People like complaining about it because they don't know it.

I studied RMcobol85. What a P-O-S. But why is SUPERIOR to other alternatives??? ah??? What is _THE_ feature that makes it THE choice for high-volume transactions????

You're an idiot.

Ok... but just tell me WHY, WHY!!!!!!! WHY COBOL!!!!

WHY... FOR FUCK'S SAKE

Name: Anonymous 2010-09-17 16:57

Probably because no one wants to remake a whole fucking system based on COBOL.

Even if the syntax looks lame, it has an advantage. It is completely human readable, something that non-programmers can appreciate.

You've never actually seen real-world COBOL. There's more to readability than a verbose syntax for elementary mathematical operations (which nobody uses anyway).

Look at the DATA DIVISION of any non-trivial COBOL program and tell me that's fucking human-readable to non-programmers.

Isn't DATA DIVISION an electropop JOY DIVISION cover band?

Don't change these.
