I want to help the linux community.

I have seen a gap in the software available for linux, and think I might be able to help. I don't want to go into what software it is, but it's something that involves a lot of commandline tools. I want to develop a GUI so the average joe can use this and it will be another thing that windows doesn't have the advantage on.
Thing is, I've not done much programming on linux apart from bash scripting, and have no GUI experience at all on it. I've installed Kdevelop (don't hate) on Ubuntu (don't hate), but I don't know what to apt-get to install the libraries that I can use for building GUI apps. Anyone know?

I don't know where this idea that GUI == user-friendly came from, but you're not doing anyone any favours by discouraging them from using the most powerful tools at their disposal.
If you want to help newbies, write bash completion scripts for applications that don't have them yet. That would achieve everything you could hope to achieve with your GUIs, and has the added bonus of not being completely retarded.

When someone is using, say, gcc and knows there's a switch that does what he wants to do but can't remember it, being able to type -<TAB> to see a list of options is much more useful than having to page through a bunch of tabs with checkboxes in a GUI.
And if he doesn't know if there is such a switch, reading the man pages (where he can also search effectively) is much better than reading the descriptions you're undoubtedly going to write next to those checkboxes in the hopes that he'll find the right one before he dies of old age.

Look, you can try to force broken paradigms onto users in the mistaken belief that they'll take to them because they're used to it, or you can do the sensible thing and tell them about exactly three things: man, apropos, and their Tab key.
In the former case you'll end up doing a lot of work and end up with users who can't fend for themselves and will be bothering you and help desks for years to come. In the latter you won't need to do a thing and the users will figure things out for themselves.

I know you believe that ``hurr durr GUI is Windows and good'', but that's not actually true. You won't attract people to Linux by pretending it's just another Windows, except one that can't run the software they're used to.

The easier it is to get more people using linux, the better hardware support there will be.
Linux already has much better hardware support than any other OS out there.

People like you are why I hate recent converts to Linux. Just keep your bullshit to the Ubanto forums and their IRC channels.

It has much more hardware support, the quality is up for debate. Still, I'm not complaining, the last problem I had with Linux hardware support was a year ago now.
