I want to help the linux community.

I have seen a gap in the software available for linux, and think I might be able to help. I don't want to go into what software it is, but it's something that involves a lot of commandline tools. I want to develop a GUI so the average joe can use this and it will be another thing that windows doesn't have the advantage on.
Thing is, I've not done much programming on linux apart from bash scripting, and have no GUI experience at all on it. I've installed Kdevelop (don't hate) on Ubuntu (don't hate), but I don't know what to apt-get to install the libraries that I can use for building GUI apps. Anyone know?
Thanks in advance.

For the averagw iwndows user, they are. This is why i want to make a press buttan recieve program version for linux. There are some good alternatives out there for windows. The easier it is to get more people using linux, the better hardware support there will be.
