But on Ubuntu and Fedora the process doesn't take so much?!
What the heck is happening?
I even have most USE flags disabled in the make file.
Shouldn't that reduce the time by A LOT?!
It's source code to something (object code? machine code? binaries?)?
Other than taht I don't know shit about compileres.
Also ism't the make install thing in Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora.. the same thing right? How is it taking so much in Gentoo than? I bet I can Ubuntu Lucid in less time ffs!!
I just compiled Arch from source too (trying them together). Will I have to go through this hell twice (still no X on Arch)?
Anyone know a way of shutting down the pc after finishing compilation? (man shutdown doesn't say shit?!)
Also anyone know a way of coping the compiled X server files for use with ARCH too (or whouldn't it work (using same hardware(kernel is configured slightly different)))?

2.5 hours into installation. 70% into compiling (download time omitted). FUCK!
p.s.
Almost had a heart attack.
Glimpse red colour coded message.
Thankfully not an error.

Why not use a real ENTERPRISE operating system like Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Linux Enterprise? They come pre-compiled so you don't have to waste your time and energy.

Xorg compiles rather quickly. What really takes forever are glibc, gcc and Qt.
Gentoo BareBone +X (no WM yet)
3.2GHz
7200 rpm SATA
4 Gigs Ram
I may just have fucked up the kernel configuration and make file?!
I installed Arch instead. Surprisingly enough /s when the job is done by a professional the difference is clear. Despite being binary based it booted in record time for my hardware but unfortunately I somehow fucked up while messing with some .conf which leads to pacman and X going insane.
So then I booted a LiveCD and while troublegoogling I somehow got attracted by a guy with a big breasted girl as avatar but that was not the main reason I was intrigued by him. He claimed that dsl would boot in less less than 7 seconds. I eagerly wasted the next hour to disprove him. Dsl was indeed nice but it wouldn't detect my wired connection (even though my neighbours wireless was up and running lol). I later discovered my router was turned off but by that time I have already scraped away every evidence of dsl on my system and backup volumes.
So again I began porngoogling until somehow I found myself on the news page a new 64-bit official port of slackware which happens to be downloading just now :)
Don't grumble about me wasting your time. It's your work ethnic that is shit. Sussman would rather release PYABTW PUT YOU ASS BACK TO WORK That way software shit or not would at least be completed so time around the deadline.
I wouldn't use Slackware. Mostly because I hate dicking with fucking dependence
I just reinstalled Debian after some repo fuckup decided to remove X completely. I didn't have my Lenny disk, and I have 6 different FreeBSD DVDs and 1 Ubanto one. I tried to make Ubanto work, but it insisted on doing lots of things by itself that fucked things up. BSDs are never an option.
Installing Debian 4 and upgrading is easier than using Ubanti ffs
>>15 pre-compiled
No, it just compiles faster on ubuntu and fedora and arch, ive gone back to debian now, the gentoo guys need to optimise there compiler
i think ill use tcc to compile a custom kernel though cos its faster
Enjoy you're trolled.

Gentoo is an incompatible piece of shit with no stable releases. And clearly, you're not happy with your choice in operating systems. Do you use your computer for any real work or entertainment? Clearly not, since you have so much time to "customize" it.
And clearly, you're not happy with your choice in operating systems.
Define happy. As I stated before I never encountered anything worst than those windows.
Clearly not, since you have so much time to "customize" it.
That's what my "work" actually involves right now. However I would be grateful if somebody would provide me with a book who would go in detail about all Unix (and derivatives) so that I can finally say I know enough about Unix.
One of the reasons I deleted Gentoo was in fact because it appeared I was learning Gentoo and Portrage and nothing else.
On a last note. Anyone can link me to some integral up to date source for and over overview of Unix (and linux).
I already am half way through LFS so anything else?
I know. My Linux "field work" is just part of the whole plan. I can't just limit myself to UNIX. Isn't Linux the dominant Unix derived server OS or am I wrong?
Tbh I never got my hands into BSD although it's on my list.
If you really want to know, I'm trying to achieve Unix Admin status in a few years time. What route would you suggest I go from here?
If X and Y are disjoint, addition is given by the union of X and Y. If the two sets are not already disjoint, then they can be replaced by disjoint sets of the same cardinality, e.g., replace X by X×{0} and Y by Y×{1}.
