Gentoo, Arch or ?

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-23 16:03

Which one?

Name: Anonymous 2010-06-23 16:06

Arch, Gentoo has fallen way behind.

If you want to play with PC try Gentoo. If you want to work on PC try Arch.
But it is better to try both of them, you will see which one is better choice for you.

Already tried both (long time ago). I think Arch has developed to be a much better system unlike Gentoo. Actually I wanted to know if there is currently a better distro than both?! Something one can work with easily but that is still fairly powerful (no Ubuntu, no LFS).

in before gobo linux advocate

If you want to compile everything by hand, go with Gentoo.
If you want a system with no man pages, go with Arch.
If you want a computer that you can actually work on, get a Mac.

Arch still doesn't have a secure package manager.

If you want to install three packages for every piece of software in order to get all the necessary files for it, use Debian.

There are a lot of legitimate reasons to hate Debian, but if that's the best you can come up with, you aren't qualified to even be in the discussion.

CentOS, for those who have lives and thus can't be bothered to fix problems every update (which is continuous for Arch and Gentoo) or every six months (Ubuntu, Fedora)...

rock solid
You know, I never got that expression. Pumice is a rock. Most rocks aren't particularly solid.

Mountains are made of rock. You often need explosives such as dynamite to get through it. There are many solid mountains.
