If you want to play with PC try Gentoo. If you want to work on PC try Arch.
But it is better to try both of them, you will see which one is better choice for you.
Already tried both (long time ago). I think Arch has developed to be a much better system unlike Gentoo. Actually I wanted to know if there is currently a better distro than both?! Something one can work with easily but that is still fairly powerful (no Ubuntu, no LFS).
If you want to compile everything by hand, go with Gentoo.
If you want a system with no man pages, go with Arch.
If you want a computer that you can actually work on, get a Mac.
I have no idea what you are looking for. There are various and planty linux distributions and everything is up to you. You can choose whatever you want, feel free to do it...

There are a lot of legitimate reasons to hate Debian, but if that's the best you can come up with, you aren't qualified to even be in the discussion.
CentOS, for those who have lives and thus can't be bothered to fix problems every update (which is continuous for Arch and Gentoo) or every six months (Ubuntu, Fedora)...
