Hardcore GNU

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-08 16:31

We see how hardcore GNU we actually are.

Easy mode: When is the last time you took a shower?
Medium mode: When is the last time you took a shower with soap
Hard mode: When is the last time you used something non-GNU?

Well?

It seems that /prog/ is disproportionately homosexual Actually, I usually bathe too

Bathing is homosexual now? I was under the impression the only people who shower instead of bathe are teenagers and people who ride bikes to work (if their place of employment provides employee showers).

Right now (I prefer using code under free licenses whenever possible, so most of the programs I have installed are BSD-licensed)

It's called "soap dodging"...
I do it sometimes because I'm lazy.

I have a morning ritual that I need to share. I call it 'the soap dodging'. First I crouch down in the shower in the classic 'bathing without soap' pose. With my eyes closed I crouch there for a minute, visualizing either bathtub or shower cabin and I start to make the water gushing sound. Then I slowly rise to a showering position and open my eyes. It helps me to proceed through my day as an emotionless, non-soap using badass. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my unsoaped leg. It ruins the fantasy.

Could people please not use /prog/ to ask information of no particular interest to /prog/riders? Hundreds of thousands of showers are taken every day. While the whole phenomenon is menacing, one of them by itself is not newsworthy. Nor is it a difficult achievement--even some monkey can do it. (Now, if you were a dog, it would be more interesting, since it would be harder to operate the shower.)

Following your example, I might send /prog/ an announcement whenever a new GNU program is written. That happens less often than showers are taken, it does the world a lot more good, it reflects more conscious creativity and hard work, and some of the /prog/riders might actually find the information useful. Even so, I think most of the /prog/riders would consider this outside the scope and purpose of /prog/. Clearly that goes double for showers.

Of course, we have another place for announcements of new GNU programs. If some people like to read shower announcements, perhaps you should set up a suitable list or newsgroup. Perhaps rec.showers? (While you're at it, start rec.baths for full immersions--they're usually more interesting to read.)

These shower announcements also spread the myth that using water for hygiene is something to be proud of, which decreases water pressure, which leads to pollution, extinction of wildlife, poverty, and ultimately mass starvation.

Perhaps the people who have decided to have no showers should start making proud announcements, so as to set a better example. I could start. I'm sure everyone on this list will be glad to know I don't plan to ever shower.

I shower everyday. In fact, I look forward to it now that the water can get hotter since the water heater has been adjusted.

I've been thinking about trying BSD, maybe FreeBSD. So yes, Non-GNU for me.

3. Today. I use all sorts of software not administered by GNU. I don't stop using GNU because I happen to be a Hurd hacker.
