what can we do about this /prog/?
A better question is "Should we do anything?" and the answer is no.

We should all read SICP and prey for them.

The "once intellectual" Reddit is a victim of its own popularity.
Reddit "intellectual" and "popular?"  when did this happen?

I don't remember it being particularly intellectual in 2008, or are we talking about it in comparison to now?

In 20x6, when all the present threads are Over 1000, we will still point to posts such as this and refer to it as HMA. No one will know what HMA means by then, for lack of exposure to the old forms, but the name will have persisted according to mindless memetics. Then one day some brave soul will trudge through the historic posts in and shine light on long the forgotten mysteries.

Then shall a renaissance take place, and our successors shall emulate, awkwardly, the old days. The old days, however, were rather awkward to begin with and though the facsimile shall be improperly constructed, it shall be more or less indifferentiable to the historians in the future of the future.

the computer programmers have been replaced by 35-year-old bag boys who like to think they're geniuzes.

Two years ago a guy referring to HTML as a programming language would have been burned at the stake; two days ago a guy referring to HTML as a programming language got 400 upvotes.

Kindest Sir,

I interject to remark that such construction is rather common in all Romance languages and not by any means particular to French. Rather than lambda-like elegance, I suggest it bears a resemblance to linked lists; in true SICP style!

Also, die in a fire.

``Bona fide''? Possibly meaningless. ``Typical'' is all too possible. I've noticed the decline in written french on the internet since I started reading french websites. If it goes farther than the internet, a ``bona fide'' francophone is probably an indistinguishable distinction.

On the other hand, >>19 struck me as contra-idiomatic, though that varies by region I suppose.

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-04 18:40

Contra-idiomatic, yes (It should've been « idiots qui se croient forts […] »). Even incorrect with more complex constructs yet with an ignorant glow and confidence. Typical French programmer in my opinion.

I meant ``bona fide'' as genuine. And genuine as true to the stereotype.

My bad, perhaps, but I find stereotype-as-criteria and genuine to be mutually exclusive in the sense that a fake only needs to be as deep as the stereotype, whereas the Real McCoy has some independent character. But I get the feeling we meant something very similar.
