Meditation and Programming

Name: Anonymous 2010-04-17 10:07

I am quite interested in starting a mindfulness meditation routine, but I am a little worried. As a means to attaining a 'peaceful mind', mindfulness meditation aims to silence your inner thought dialog and keep your focus on the hear and the now. I am worried that getting rid of that inner dialog will cause me to be a less effective programmer. Its that spaced out, off in my own world, thinking to myself kind of state that I utilize to solve programming problems. Am I in danger of hurting my skills as a programmer by practicing this?

Programming is a task suited to the logical unemotional mind. Meditating allows one to become in touch with the soul - the true self. Once you find the true self, programming will seem insignificant, and you will wish to play bongos and sit in fields

What? I don't even know where to begin with this one. Is mindfulness even a word?

Its a loanword
Mindfulness (Sanskrit: smṛti, Pali: sati) plays a central role in the teaching of Buddhist meditation where it is affirmed that "correct" or "right" mindfulness (Sanskrit samyak-smṛti, Pali: sammā-sati) is the critical factor in the path to liberation  and subsequent enlightenment.

Meditation serves to silence the useless thoughts that disturb you. You will not get rid of your inner dialog unless you want to, infact you can even enhance it by meditation which can increase your focus and help you visualize thoughts.
There are many diffrent ways and practices of meditation, you can maybe even find some that are programming related.

I wondered about a similar thing when I wanted to start drawing. After all, I would start using my right hemisphere instead of my left, and I wondered whether that would affect my performance in mathematical and programming problems.
However, I believe that you can't really get worse at stuff just because you practice something different -- after all, your skills are a result of your time and effort, and nobody can take them away from you.
I think that meditation will make you a more effective programmer (or a more effective person in general, if you catch my drift).
