What's been lately on my mind...

Say you have an electronic gizmo, and the gizmo has a volume meter. It can be any kind of a linearly changeable property, but let's go with volume. And on that gizmo, MP3 player or a media player or whatever, the volume meter is hidden when non active. And when you hit the +/- button, the meter appears. The paradox here is: Do you prefer the first button press just to make the meter visible, or make it visible, and also change the volume? It really makes me angry when I want to turn up the volume, and the meter appears at full, and I don't know if it was full before I turned it up.
Speak your mind, /prog.

First button press should make it visible and change it. Why would you want anything otherwise??

paradox
swing and a miss

As for the meter, I prefer that it is invisible, since I judge the volume by ear instead of by sight. If it's an mp3 player, I prefer to have the volume slider on the headphones, rather than on the player, as I can adjust without taking it out of my pocket.

I want it to change on first press, for this specific control.

My thermostat light up and does not change on first press, which is the correct action, since I'm probably not sure what the temperature is currently set to. Most likely I don't want to turn it up if it's already set to 72, so increasing on first press would just be irritating because I'd have to turn it back down.

If I'm increasing the volume control I already do know how loud it is: not loud enough, and I'll obviously be able to tell whether it gets louder when I press the button. A volume readout serves only as a sanity check after the fact. If I'm listening to music of normal volume and I've gone above 75% or so, I know I should quit turning it up.

Did anyone else take advantage of their school's computer lab in high school?

I remember printing off several hundred page technical documents in class when the teacher wasn't looking. Not that she would have cared - she's not paying for the ink/paper or anything. I would take the papers home, hole-punch them, and pour over my fancy books from the comfort of my bed. All be fucked if I was going to read them on a tiny monitor at my desk.

Sometimes I feel kind of bad for using all of those supplies, but hey, at least I was getting some good use out of my assholish activities, unlike the stupid fucks jamming toilets and such.

Yeah, you might want to look into some anger management classes.

Or at least a class on hearing protection. If your volume is at maximum, you're either deafening yourself or your mippy three is terrible and you need a new one.
