My wheels are spinning, like my fan

Hello /prague/

Since my last dist-upgrade my laptop fan is spinning over and over, and I'm a bit pissed of. How do I shut it down?

Sounds like you've got the linux virus. Install windows now!

I thought there are no linux virus. Also afaik windows is less secure than linux. Is there an antivirus for linux?

There are actually a handful. Both malware and actual file infectors. There's even some file infectors which are relatively common in the wild (as much as file infectors can be common these days - not much), usually spread through infected local root exploit binaries skiddies use.

Responding to /g/-level troll:

Also afaik windows is less secure than linux.
I wouldn't say either platform is more secure than the either. Unsecure Windows defaults and general dumb userbase makes it seem less secure. Linux is just a kernel by itself, and how secure a linux-based OS depends entirely on the distribution and the administrator.

Is there an antivirus for linux?
Yes, and some rootkit detectors too, but why would you need an antivirus to begin with. You don't need one in Linux, nor Windows. If you've ran bad code, you've already lost.

Typical security asshole.
inb4: Windows has viruses just because is used more than linux.
also inb4: Windows is good.

Come on guys, just install macosX

They both have malware. Windows has more for obvious reasons(large userbase). Also, coding low-level crap like that is usually more fun in Windows than is on *nixes since you retain binary compatibility between platforms and kernel versions. Linux malware tends to be often distributed in source form since binary compatibility cannot always be guaranteed (unless you want huge statically linked binaries).
also inb4: Windows is good.
It's a platform like any other. It has its strengths and weaknesses.

Your feeble skills of Troll-starver are no match for the power of the Trolls.
You have paid the price for your lack of vision.

Linux is just a kernel by itself

the UNIX multiuser enviorment and file permission model provide a level of security to some extent.

that is something that windows doesnt seem to have and even if it has, then its not used.

WinNT has a pretty elaborate ACL model and it's used, but if the user just chooses the run using admin privileges most of the time then it doesn't matter what the underlying security model is. It's the same as running under root all the time. It's incorrect to judge an OSes security based on its dumb users: you judge it on how well it serves you.

MY ANUS has a pretty lax ACL model if you know what i mean

Let's just say, filesystem constipation is no trouble for this particular fellow.
