Best Free Anti-virus Software

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-14 5:37

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent freeware anti-virus software.

Been using Avast and was told there are better alternatives...

You are slightly mistaken. Linux is not a kernel, it's an Operating System, complete with drivers and providing abstraction over the hardware. You can find pure Linux, with no traces of GNU bloat, in many embedded devices, for example TiVo.

GNU, on the other hand, is merely a Command Line Interface, that is usually included as a part of desktop and server Linux distributions. Sure, command line interface traditionally plays an important role in UNIX operating systems, but still, it isn't qualitatively different from GUI. I don't think that I should say that I have a "new OS" when I switch from Awesome to dwm, for example.

An important nuance that you probably overlook is the difference between an OS and a Distribution. Distribution maintainers may choose to reflect some of the included components in the name, like, for instance, "KUbuntu (a GNU/Linux distribution)". Here "K" and "GNU" parts indicate that it's a Linux operating system augmented with GNU CLI and KDE GUI. There are no strict rules of course, as the very notion of Distribution is somewhat fuzzy, the notion of the Operating System, on the other hand, is quite precise, and replaceable or even removable parts such as User Interface must not be included.
