Best Free Anti-virus Software

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent freeware anti-virus software.

Been using Avast and was told there are better alternatives...

I agree, my C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\bin directory currently contains more than 120 *.exe files, so I call my system GNU/Windows, as my whole system is basically GNU running on top of Windows kernel and a few non-GNU components, such as GUI.
