Best Free Anti-virus Software

Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent freeware anti-virus software.

Been using Avast and was told there are better alternatives...

text editor, compiler, command line input programs were part of the OS
Personally, I'd call them ``System software'', but I'm a picky bastard.
