advocacy trolls

Someone posts a question about 'what is he best programming language to do X' where 'to do X' is often missing.

Someone invariably mentions Lisp, even if not in the first post.

Why the fuck do Lispniks respond with a rebuttal? Samefag trolls will make new threads anyway.

You could be bored. You could be deluded into thinking that someone will learn Lisp by hearing about it on /prog/. You could be deluded into thinking that someone will not learn Lisp because he heard on /prog/ that it sucks.

But most probably it's a single Lispnik troll arguing both sides.

<peculiar> Did anyone ever write captcha software that detects not only non-humans, but also fucktards and trolls? Even fucktards that are very persistent and know how to use google?
<ScriptBaatezu> Hmmm. Domain specific captchas :P

DISCUSS.

<ScriptBaatezu> Something like a captcha showing the fork bomb and asking the users to type the output. The guy who leaves it blank knows not to run it and find the output. :P

i have noticed that there has been a lot of arguing about Lisp these days.
but what is /prog/ without arguing about shit that doesn't matter?

Name: Anonymous 2009-11-06 6:37

Is there any harm in this? Most of these pissing matches only exist because someone mentions Lisp and he says something incorrect about it, then a Lisper ends up answering to correct him. I don't care if anyone here learns a new language like not(be it Lisp or something else), since it's up to the individual to decide what he should learn or not, and wether it would be beneficial or a waste of time, however I did see a couple of /prog/riders actually decide to learn new languages on because of /prog/ posts. You can tell such things when they post new threads asking for newbie help, or sometimes joining an irc channel for help for a specific language, and I notice obscure /prog/ memes slipping by in their conversation, even if I bet most other lurkers in those channels wouldn't realize what that person actually said. It's a funny feeling.

I started learning LISP because I read those posts. I'm up to chapter 3 in SICP.

the internet is full of autists doing shit that doesn't matter. don't lose your time questioning their reasons.

PS LISP

Is there any harm in this?

There is. It lowers signal-to-noise ratio. And yes, it's relevant, because around zero s/n ratio could be (P)RNG output. Unless someone wants to read PRNG output in which case it's closer to one.

>>5 is unfunny

>>6 "PS LISP"

Well no one yet corrected him about that so it's not so bad as I thought.

/prog/ has always had a soft spot for alternative language choices, and Lisp continues to be about as alternative as you can get. The recent outbreak seems to have been caused by an <insert-appropriate-adjective-here> anti-lisper and is not appreciated by either the Lispers or the other Lisp haters.

No, actually it was an obnoxious schemer that started it.
A post a similar to the following was made in a thread that was discussing C programming after one poster made a careless mistake in a code snippet he posted:
Just another reason that C is shit.
Signed,
Just another Schemer

I can tell you for sure because I was in a particularly bad mood that day and in response I started stiring up shit and trolling scheme/Lisp/functional programming threads.
Other people have now taken sides and it has turned into a holy war of such.
So, no. You are wrong. Don't be a blame shifting faggot.
The first punch was not thrown by an anti-lisper

,,Alternative'' as in ,,Limp Bizkit'' and ,,System of a Down'', I presume?

Oh wow, you started all this shit because you couldn't ignore a really shitty troll

I lol'd

Actually, there are a lot of functional programmers who say bad things about C.
More so than there was people who say bad things about their languages.
Although, they seem to be quieting down as of late.
That post was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Does ``ScriptBaatezu'' always end his messages with a ``:P''?

Name: Anonymous 2009-11-06 8:51

You do realize that Lisp is not purely functional. It's just one of many paradigms supported.

Name: Anonymous 2009-11-06 8:53

>>14
I do.
It's hard not to know that when "Lisp is the ultimate programming language that supports everything" is the first and only argument that Lispers ever put forth.

We say bad things about languages all the time, I personally have insulted C++ at least once a day for the past year. As far as being insulted goes, C usually gets off pretty lightly here

Everybody hates Sepples.
I'm no exception.

Name: Anonymous 2009-11-06 9:58

If that was me, I must have made that post several months ago. C is pretty shit, I am sorry you don't see it, but it is the best low-level language going. I think everyone should know lisp and C. Some day maybe someone will make a better C. Sepples and D are not such a result.

>>16
C is not pretentious. It's a fairly simple language, even if the syntax is horrible. It couldn't keep any promises, but it never made them (unlike sepples/java, for example) so there's no reason to beat on it.

This is what the LispTroll(s) actually want /prog/ to believe

Don't change these.
