Hey, guys.

I'm having a problem. I need to fetch the most recent version of Danbooru by doing what this page tell me to:

http://danbooru.donmai.us/help/source_code

"You can get the Danbooru source code using Subversion. Run svn co svn://donmai.us/danbooru/trunk for the latest copy."

Here's my problem; I had never seen "svn://" before, nor did I know what Subversion was before the a couple days ago. After googling and researching, I got a grasp of what it was and why it was necessary. So I downloaded a program necessary to 'open' an svn:// address [namely VisualSVN] but since install it, I haven't been able to figure it out. Everything I do to try and run "svn://donmai.us/danbooru/trunk" ends with an error which implies I'm doing something wrong.

Can someone walk me through the steps necessary to get the latest version from "svn://donmai.us/danbooru/trunk", please?

Ultimately, my plan is to get my own Danbooru site running. I'm learning little by little what that entails so I'm well aware that I've got one hell of a bumpy road ahead of me. Especially since this is 100% unfamiliar territory for me.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium; I figured I'd mention that before someone asks if I'm running Ubuntu and why I'm using VisualSVN instead of Debian.

Any and all help is appreciated.

You plan on stealing Danbooru images and getting ad revenue?

No. That's corny. I have an idea that won't compete with any of the several *boorus I've come across over the years. But to say I'm inexperienced is an understatement. So I need all the guidance I can get.

>>3 Why is your idea of CMS is copying Danbooru then? Danbooru isn't the best or fastest CMS by a wide margin.

VisualSVN sucks. Download and install tortoise.

Once that's done, go to whatever folder on your PC, right click, do a SVN checkout and enter the information needed.

I'm seeing how high Danbooru and its clones score on Alexa; rougly 3,500 - 6,500 by rank. Then a light bulb lights up over my head.

I've been a browser and a fan since the first version and I've seen how well-received it's been since then. I just didn't want to try 'fixing' a formula that [seemingly] isn't broken.

Wow, I had to ctrl+f just to find that on here:
http://subversion.tigris.org/getting.html#binary-packages

I'll give it a try.

I don't think anyone can use 4chan et al. without realising that, I mean look at Shiichan's codebase.

Making a 4chan clone is easy(IIRC there hundreds of clones). Generating the content which attracts users isn't.

The content on danbooru is all over the internet. The winner is the ability to find exactly what you're looking for, quickly and effortlessly, by searching specific tags pertaining to your query.

>>13 Images with tag clouds? This is your unique feature?
Youtube, Blogger, Flickr and Slashdot all have been using tags. For years. And they don't need to install Ruby On Rails to enjoy this unique feature.

Reread what I said. I never once implied tagging was unique to Danbooru. Just that its tagging feature is one of the reasons why I'd rather use it than going with another CMS.

I now see why you're being so abrasive, though.

I'm curious to know what are they.

That's nice, I'm glad I intrigue you. But forgive for not being so eager to share; all you're doing is fussing and I could accept that if you were at least offering some suggestions for an alternate to Danbooru, but you aren't.

I've thought about it. If all else fails, I'll be giving it a shot. rule34.paheal seems to be doing alright for itself...

Thanks. I checked it out, but I'm certain what I'm looking for isn't a photoblog. That and its Alexa score isn't too thrilling. Seems rather obscure.

I also just checked out http://www.pligg.com/ but its tagging system isn't what I'm looking for. It's not specific enough.

Call me naive but so far I'd feel more comfortable with a Danbooru or a Shimmie CMS.

Yea and no. I come to the text boards when I can't get an answer from the imageboards. And I haven't had to do that since April of '06, when /g/ couldn't figure out what was wrong with my newly-bought motherboard.

Heh.
