Is this what a geek is?

I didn't think it was just hipsters who host podcasts, buy every new portable device and have accounts on every social network.

I guess I was wrong.

Motherfucking god I'm raging hard here.  Fucking hipster filth.

s/baud/bps/ #fixme: handle plurals
It's technically not the right term but it's more legible and sounds better. Also, it's perfectly possible for a baud to equal a bit.

This page is sort of a speculative glance at what a programming language on a Klingon computer system would look like. The language itself is named var'aq, which happens to be meaningless in standard Klingon but sounds like it might be named after some famous Klingon computer scientist or mathematician. It's really something of a Klingon Basic, a simple, loosely-typed programming language designed mostly just to be used for programming things like command displays and high-level control systems. In its eventual final incarnation, we're looking at concurrency, advanced mathematics, and even native support for distributed programs (try finding that in the C++ standard library).
This page is a bit more than that, though. In it I try to imagine what Klingon hacker culture is like based on what's known about Klingon culture in general. For example, it's a man's world on Qo'noS, Chancellor Azetbur's history-making tenure notwithstanding.

I predicted this would happen a few years ago, which is why I learned Ruby. It seems that it doesn't matter how traditional a geek you are, if you code in Ruby you can still hang out with the cool new crew. Bye faggots, I'm getting some Starbucks

That doesn't really make much sense.

People think they're geeks because they use facebook and twitter and use macs?

What is this world coming to?

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-18 9:26

>>53
Now I really don't like Ruby

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-18 9:28

the reason these morons think they're geeks is because they hang around with "popular" people. popular people don't know anything about computers because they don't need to, they are only interested in partying and fucking cheerleaders or whatever.
compared to their friends (who struggle to use a mouse), these hipster morons seem like technology gods just because they have heard of javascript and know how to use twitter.
because these people have never met true geeks they actually begin to believe that they know ANYTHING; resulting in the kind of facepalm inducing hilarity found in this video.

or at least that's my take on it

Geeks within the popular crowd

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-18 9:38

I never use the word geek. It's such a stupid word. Even so, this vid still makes me rage.

Assuming the axiom of choice and, given an infinite cardinal σ and a cardinal μ, there exists a cardinal κ such that μ + κ = σ if and only if μ ≤ σ. It will be unique (and equal to σ) if and only if μ < σ.

\sum_{i=0}^{\infty} \, f(i) = \infty means that the sum of the infinite series diverges in the specific sense that the partial sums grow without bound.

Modern understanding of infinity began in 1867–71, with Cantor's work on number theory. An 1872 meeting between Cantor and Richard Dedekind influenced Cantor's thinking and culminated in Cantor's 1874 paper.

For example, the existence of sufficiently large cardinals implies that there is an inner model satisfying the axiom of determinacy (and thus not satisfying the axiom of choice).

Given any set X of pairwise disjoint non-empty sets, there exists at least one set C that contains exactly one element in common with each of the sets in X.

Statements in this class include the statement that P = NP, the Riemann hypothesis, and many other unsolved mathematical problems. When one attempts to solve problems in this class, it makes no difference whether ZF or ZFC is employed if the only question is the existence of a proof. It is possible, however, that there is a shorter proof of a theorem from ZFC than from ZF.
