Industry insiders claim it is the number one OS for embedded chips in both Japan and the United States.

The Japanese government planned to introduce the Matsushita PC in its schools, but the United States government objected, claiming that the plan constituted market intervention and threatening Japan with sanctions (partly at the request of Microsoft).

I am sad. I'd like to imagine we would have OS heterogeneity by now if it weren't for this dickery. :(

Stranded in this mill town railroad yard while the whole world was converging elsewhere, we seemed to be nothing but children playing among heroic men.

It requires great courage to look and judge oneself honestly and forge one's own path.

In the unlikely event it would cause a monopoly in The Great Nation of Nippon, the "other" monopoly would've been forced to provide at least somewhat interoperable software at a much earlier date. To bad they were too dependent on the US back then.

Look at what's happening in the EU right now. If the same would happen in Japan back then, we'd have a much healthier "ecosystem" right now.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years you'd notice EU is pushing for IT integration into the public office. On the road to that was the standardisation of the ODF. The premise was that when you communicate with a public office over the internet, you should not be required to buy a licence for a proprietary office package. (when you do your taxes or submit forms, for example)

That is the sole reason why MS implemented ODF support in Office. (although they've managed to brake interoperability  completely and remain standards compliant)

I heard the French police has already migrated to OpenOffice.org and are planning to switch to a completely free OS package.

MS Office > Open Office

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-11 2:33

WordPerfect > MS Office

``Desktop publishing'' software aimed at non-technical users is a horrible mess either way. Arguing about whether it's better to eat stale shit or shit straight from the anus isn't particularly interesting; the point is that government agencies migrating to open source software is at least a good sign.

Free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.
