In the unlikely event it would cause a monopoly in The Great Nation of Nippon, the "other" monopoly would've been forced to provide at least somewhat interoperable software at a much earlier date. To bad they were too dependent on the US back then.

Look at what's happening in the EU right now. If the same would happen in Japan back then, we'd have a much healthier "ecosystem" right now.
