Why are computers so fucking slow?

Name: Anonymous 2009-07-06 21:53

I mean, jesus.  We've come all this way and yet computers are still slow as fuck.  We make faster computers, better hardware, and it still just sucks ass.  Why the hell is this?

Bloated Software, it expands to fill the resources afforded by better hardware

Because those things are used as excuses for lazier programmers using shittier languages.  Next question.

Name: Anonymous 2009-07-06 21:55

Have it occured to you that software gets slower too?

Name: Anonymous 2009-07-06 22:01

Simple, because computers do a shitton more than they used to.

Name: Darkkal !CTaNqTxDio 2009-07-06 22:15

its because u have a pc that was made prior to dual core like mine

And so was /b/ brought on /prog/!
May bowels of yours tremble as homosexuality ravages this peaceful land!

But seriously, how is it possible that /prog/ had good grammar, intelligent people and was clear of idiots for so long?

Excuse me, but I believe the answer to you're question can be found in post >>8

grammar nazis != intelligent;
grammar nazis == OCD;

But yes, i have noticed a recent surge in retards. I think it's because moot is advertising that 4chan firefox toolbar thing on the imageboards, and that helpful toolbar makes it easy for idiots discover the textboards.

Hmm.. thats sounds quite about right.

True, but also:
good grammar == !(idiot);
shit grammar == idiot;

Somehow /prog/ was pretty idiot-free when it used frames, which didn't do much to hide text boards. In frame based 4chan interface they are hidden by default, but clicking one '+' is enough to show them.

How do ideas come? What a question! If they come of their own accord, they are apt to arrive at the most unexpected time and place. For the most part the place is out of doors, for up in this northern wilderness when nature puts on a show it is an inspiring one. There seem to be magic days once in a while, with some rare quality of light that hold a body spellbound: In sub-zero weather there will be a burst of unbelievable color when the mountain turns a deep purple, a thing it refuses to do in summer. Then comes the hard part: how to plan a picture so as to give to others what has happened to you. To render in paint an experience, to suggest the sense of light and color, air and space, there is no such thing as sitting down outside and trying to make a “portrait” of it. It lasts for only a minute, for one thing, and it isn’t an inspiration that can be copied on the spot...

I must disagree.
Summer only increases the problem, it doesn't create it.
Text boards are, by default, hidden. Summer-spawned individuals tend to lack skills to discover them on their own.
If frames were the default option now, we would have much bigger problem. Yet, when it was the default one, /prog/ had high level of average intelligence.

I had a computer 15 years ago that could play a 128kbit mp3 or load a primitive web page.  But not both at once, because of the intense processing requirements.  You're chart can go fuck its'elf.

You're chart
No, he isn't a chart.
its'elf
Elf belonging to it?

Please, do not make such mistakes on /prog/. We have /b/ for that.

Take Vista, which I have had a bad experience with: it takes about ten minutes for the machine I'm on to be able to do anything useful. Why? Because most of the Windows crap that starts with the computer is bottlenecked through svchost.exe, because Mickeysoft thought it was a good idea to do it that way. Right now, 13 instances of this program are running, using about 200 megs of memory, and as far as I know it is just MS Spyware.
