programming on a netbook

Name: newb 2009-07-01 21:41

I've been teaching myself python on my old macbook pro for a while now, and I'll be heading off to college soon.  Assuming I'll be majoring in computer science, which laptop would fit all of my basic programming needs?  I kind of have a fetish for netbooks, and I've wanted an Eee 1000 for so long now, but I don't know if I could handle the keyboard and screen, and if the netbook could handle some of the more complex coding I may be doing.   What would you guys recommend for lasting me through college?

Thinkpad.

If you're going to be doing anything more than trivial work, you might want to connect an external monitor and keyboard to it. You wouldn't want to spend long stretches of time doing serious work without them.

You're not going to be doing complex coding. The eee's keyboard is weird, but you'd probably get used to it. Especially with a WM like StumpWM.

Complex or simple doesn't matter with netbooks like the eee. The thing that matters is the duration of time you intend to work with them.

I have an Eee 900, which is like 1.5" smaller than the 1000, and it is physically impossible for me to type normally on the keyboard. If you can type one-handed, maybe it's alright, but for me the ~50wpm penalty for doing so would be unacceptable if I was doing large amounts of typing.  Like I said, the 1000 is bigger, but I don't know if it would make enough of a difference.  Your hands might be smaller than mine, too.

And IMO, if you're going to hook up external shit to a netbook, you should just get a proper laptop.  Once you start adding stuff, you totally defeat the purpose of it being smaller and portable.

tl;dr: Don't buy netbooks for serious work.

Hullo >>1-chan, I've got a 13" aluminium Macfagbook, and it's wholesomely light and fantastic to carry about, and put on my fanny when working on the sopher. I authored my unemployment treatises on it in February, and several computer viruses in March and April. I also smuggled it with me into Japan by claiming it was a water bottle.

I do plenty of programming on my 901. It's quite nice.
Then again I can also type approximately 50wpm on a TI-92.

No, really. I took all my class notes on it.

either you expected to cheat on tests or you are a huge douche who scrolled around on a calculator screen when referencing all his notes.
or both.
regardless, I certainly hope someone rapes you to death.

OP mentioned worrying about whether it would be able to handle complex coding.

'sup, fatfingers. There's no question an eee feels funny at first (I tend to way overshoot the key I want), but how can you not type normally on one?

I hooked it up to my computer after class and printed them out, fagass.

Seriously, what typing technique did you use?  How big are your hands?

Index / middle / ring finger on both hands, hit space with index finger. Also I didn't bother with punctuation much, I did that later on along with the formatting.
