Firefox memory leak

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-12 5:37

This is why I have to reboot about once a week... leaking memory from Firefox. I go to open a VM, and I'm suddenly having to use some swap.

However, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04, and overall memory usage seems to be down a bit... maybe I can probably go longer between reboots now.

hmmmm, you upgraded Ubuntu and the memory leak in Firefox was fixed?

This was posted on Slashdot by a seven-digit UID by the way.

You know, you can just end the firefox processes and all the memory they allocated will be released, you don't have to reboot the whole computer.

He's using Ubanto, that's why he is not aware of that.

pffft, linux sucks.
i'm using vista, and according to my uptime gadget my computer has been running for -115 days, -15 hours, -6 minutes, and -25 seconds.
oh yeah, niggers.
that's right! it's been running for so long that it's had an integer overflow

My God! What I would have killed for to have that kind of uptime during those dark Windows 9x days; I'd be lucky if I made one week with my Windows 95 and 98 boxes. Thank God for the Windows NT based systems we have today.

That would actually be Linux's fault. Or GNU. Whoever implemented malloc() in Ubuntu needs to get it improved to not fragment memory.

just use a windows build of firefox in wine or use freebsd.
either way, problem solved.
or do both, and be able to use all those plugins that are "windows-only", like adobe flash.
yes, there is a linux version of flash, but it crashes after about 2 seconds (on freebsd it only takes about 1.5 seconds... it crashes at the same place, it just takes longer to get there on slow as fuck linux) so it's not really usable.

You do know that the Firefox memory fragmentation issue also affects the Windows build. The memory fragmentation problem is malloc(). Also, the official flash binary is horrible piece of computer programming and should never be used for the sake freedom.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-12 19:39

If you're too lazy to just kill the firefox process and restart it, just log out and log back in. There's no reason to reboot the whole computer. Linux doesn't need reboots!

the windows build is a lot better than the linux build.
also, if the official flash binary is so bad, what should i use instead?

>>14
how do you recover from a kernel panic without rebooting?

The official binary is bad, but there's nothing better, so just use it.

Anyone who suggests Gnash or swfdec is a faggot.

The right answer is to use nothing until the situation improves.

that's a pretty good answer... if browser developers get off their asses and start getting HTML5 and CSS3 support and better SVG support into more browsers.

Save a tree.  Shut down every night.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-12 21:54

no.
i'd rather save the environment by beheading a hippy; it would be about 1000 * more effective than shutting down each night

Save a tree — disband an ISO working group today.

I turn off my computer whenever I'm not using it.

Being proud of a long uptime seems very bizarre to me.

I agree with you. I try to save energy by turning off my computer.

Install Debian and Iceweasel.

You don't do that on a server. Having 900 plus day uptime on your servers is something to be proud of, son.

No, it's OK, I assure you that I am indeed a faggot. However I use Debian, therefore I am also very manly.

is there like a totally aewsome browser framework that is just like a plugin hoster, and you can load plugins which get a tab and a process within the hoster and can do stuff eg load a webpage.

this would be totally aewsome for 2 reasons

if a webpage has loads of gayness and plugins and hangs it can be killed easily without killing the whole "browser".

loads of plugins could be written by open source basement dwellers like an msn one and an email one and a irc one and a whatever one and all be in this nice tidy framework of aewsomeness.

you don't replace your servers at least once every two years?

No need to on big iron. 'Sides it costs like an SUV or two to replace.

big iron? why? my x86-64 cluster is probably twice as powerful and probably cost less than half as much...
