My job consists of writing device driver and networking stack type of stuff for a proprietary OS in C. That's pretty low level stuff compared to most positions advertised on recruitment websites. As such, I don't think this career has much future. Should I just start learning BEST PRACTICES ASYNCHRONOUS AJAX WEB 2.0 SOLUTIONS on my spare time in order to avoid unemployment and ruining my life?

No. Write as much as you can, and you will be kept around at least for the purpose of maintaining it.

well CrApple will be going out of business soon,
so yes, it would be a good idea
Java codemonkeys are everywhere, but if you do low-level or embedded stuff you'll be much more rarer and more desired. The same goes for expert systems programmers and those who know asm.
I can write real programs. Should I become an Indian?
